? There's a difference between 'less' and 'fewer'. Less is used when the difference is indeterminate: "Less than a million gallons of oil spewed out of the hole in the Gulf of Mexico in the last five minutes"; fewer is used when the number is known: "Express Lane: 12 items or fewer" (and yes, most supermarket/box store express lane signs are WRONG
)
