Advice?

A classmate of mine was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. Cancerous or not, I don't know. They've been in my classes since the 7th grade, but we're not friends. Different cliques and the like.
I really would like to approach this person to let them know that my thoughts and prayers are with them, but also to let them know if they ever need to talk, I'm here. I know how scary it can be to find out you have a tumor, but also to be out of school and constantly in hospitals.

How would you do this? I just don't want it to be awkward, and then have this person turn around and say 'Oh,so-and-so talked to me and said XYZ,can you believe that?How rude' or something of the like.

If you were in their position,would you be offended?

I can't really know what to tell you for advice.
But if I had a brain tumor, I'd probably be one of those stubborn 'I'll believe it, but I won't do anything about it' kind of person. I'd be too afraid to fight... but if I had someone to be there to talk to.. someone who knows what it's like, I'd probably get through it okay.
I'd think it was a great gesture.
But everyone takes these kinds of things differently.

Remember how you felt when you first found out, sonya. He feels like that too. So, would you have wanted someone to say that to you? if the answer is yes, then say it. if the answer is no, then don't.
