Hey guys

I have a Sony nex 3 which Iove but am going to take a photography course as I want to develop some skills and learn what the camera can do....anyway....my friend is selling their canon 1000d dslr and has offered it to me for a very good price!

So...shall I stick with the Sony And do the course with this OR upgrade to the entry level dslr canon?

I know that the canon doesn't shoot video like my Sony but I have a separate hd camcorder so not too worried about that.
Thanks for your thoughts in advance....

IMO the Sony Nex 3 is a better model in terms of features and performance than the Canon Rebel XS (1000D). The Sony has all the features you need to take control, more really than the Canon Rebel XS has. And the Sony has better ISO performance.

There are pros and cons to go either way though.

I agree and would not consider that change an upgrade. You will likely have funny looks at the photography class although as the mirrorless segment has grown that may be less than a year or two ago. The instructor may or may not be able to help you with particulars to that specific camera but the NEX 3 has the same basic operations as any DSLR. If you like the camera then go with it and I'd say to only change if you are unhappy with it.
