advice or advise

The whole advice/advise thing used to bother me too. Based on the advice from my doc, I'm over it. :rotfl:

Like...take time to roll your eyes?

It's good to exercise your eyeballs every once in a while.

Or should I say "it is"?

:sad2:

Oh, and my lips could use a workout too: :rolleyes1

HEY EVERYONE!! CHILL!!

Grammar lesson of the day:

Singular nouns do not take plural pronouns.

Incorrect: When a poster throws a hissy fit about another grammar thread, I assume that they have nothing better to do.

Correct: When a poster throws a hissy fit about another grammar thread, I assume that he (or she) has nothing better to do.

English needs a gender-neutral singular pronoun. In our efforts to achieve gender-neutral writing, we've run over noun-pronoun agreement rules. Writing "he/she" just doesn't sound right. Even worse is the "s/he/it" construction, which looks like it sounds.

Any suggestions on a suitable new word to serve as a gender-neutral singular pronoun?

Math lesson of the day:

When people change their mind and decide to go in the opposite direction, they've made a 180-degree turn. If you make a 360-degree turn, you're back where you started.

Are you suggesting "sheit"? :)

On a related topic, I like the word "y'all" since it denotes a plural "you," which is also sorely lacking from the language.

I like "zie" We could also use the sign that Prince uses for his name.

What should I place here?
Now taking suggestions.

NLP, I suggest that you change your signature to:

"Grammarians do it correctly."

We would have a co-ed gym class today, but I have a doctor's note.

"Please excuse nuttylawprofessor from physical education classes until March 18. Any strenuous exercise could damage her sutures and wounds from her March 7 surgery."

I've seen a few academics use "zie," but that looks stranger than a misused "they." :confused3

Live by the sword...
:p

I did say that most errors on the DIS were probably typos. Since you read my post with an eagle-eye to spot any errors, I am sure you noticed that. If I consistently write "to" when I mean "too", then I would agree that I am lazy and careless.

See! See! I told ya'! (you!) :rotfl2:

xyzabc33, I left out the soda just for you tonight.
