Advice on Renting from RCI Person

Hi all. I'm a DVC Member with two small contracts. We only go to Disney every couple of years so it works for us. I'm planning to go next spring and some family members want to go with us so I'm finding myself in a points crunch. Of course, I was taking a look on ebay and couldn't believe how cheaply one Bedrooms at SSR go for. It's clear it's an RCI thing - $95 fee and I know how many points a one bedroom vs a studio is.

I also understand some of the risks of renting online. (Yes. DVC could find out and cancel.)

However, I feel like a fish out of water b/c so much has changed since I last went to Disney. Apparently, I'm supposed to register at "mydisneyexperience" and my "magicband" will control everything under the sun. Will I or my family members be able to do this if we rent from an RCI person.

(We are not going to be doing DME or the Dining Plan). Any advice appreciated.

Thanks, Amy

Its against the RCI terms of service to rent these reservations, and if caught, the reservation may be cancelled (it has happened in the past). But its an issue from the RCI end, not the DVC end.

I don't know what the price difference is that you're looking at as far as this RCI rental, but I would feel a lot more comfortable renting from someone here on the rent/trade board than renting one of those eBay RCI deals.

As crisi said, renting an RCI exchange is against both DVC and RCI rules. If detected (and that's easy for either DVC or RCI), the reservation could be canceled with no notice at all to you. You show up and have nowhere to stay.

A second consideration. Anyone who exchanges via RCI knows darn well that renting exchanges is NOT permitted and the reservation is subject to cancellation. Do you really want to do business with someone like that?

If you're going to rent something, rent via the DIS Rent/Trade board or through one of the legitimate brokers who connect renters with real, legitimate DVC owners.

It's really RCI not Disney that is at issue here. RCI will actually allow rentals but only for the exchange fee and guest certificate fee. I think one would be safe from a friend but I wouldn't do so over ebay or similar.

I wouldn't rent one from Ebay, the cost savings would not be worth it to me.

Since you really didn't ask for advice and said you understand the risk, let me try to answer the question. :)

My understanding is that once you have the RCI reservation, you can call DVC Member Services, ask for the group that handles RCI reservations and get the actual DVC reservation number. (The number to call should be on the RCI paperwork provided to you by the person selling it). You can link the actual DVC reservation number to your MDE account (which you have to set up yourself) and from there, make your FP+ reservations at 60 days out. Disney will send a magic band to each member of the party listed on the reservation (MS can add them for you up to the stated maximum for the villa you reserved). HTH

But if RCI decides to cancel the reservations, you'll have all that and no reservation.

FWIW, I do not recall ever reading a credible report here that said DVC actually cancelled their reservation obtained from a RCI trade.

While I would not take the risk myself, I believe the risk is much less than many who post here believe it to be.

I know of many that II canceled and I know of several that RCI/DVC cancelled for other reasons, namely that there was an Orlando Points resort in the account. I also know of a number of cancelations, blocked accounts for a year an one or two lifetime bans related to rentals with RCI though I'm not sure any were DVC. It's simply an element of risk with a potential for savings. The problem with sites such as ebay and redweeks is they are high profile and easy for the exchange companies to track so I believe the risk is greater there than overall. There are also people who are active at reporting such rental posts to RCI. I also know of several RCI exchanges that were confirmed and later canceled due to the 1 in 4 (or similar) rule.

It's not DVC who would cancel the reservation, but RCI. If they find an individual renting our exchanges, then they'll close that person's account and cancel ALL outstanding reservations. There's no telling how much notice you'd receive.

Ok....ok...uncle! Carol: Thank you for answering the question. That said I am considering just buying one time use points or purchasing some point from a friend. We usually get a studio at SSR and I was tempted by the inexpensive 1 bedroom. (The kids are getting bigger). But it's not worth me worrying about things and I do like to "control" the reservation.

I will say that when I can't use my points I've rented them on eBay and it find it's out worked out well, so it had assuaged some of my concerns.

Thanks to all. :-) Excited to start my planning.

Huh? What's the difference between that and renting points? Is is just being a DVC Owner grabbing some extra points versus a non-owner renting a bunch?
You can buy up to 24 one-time-use points directly from Disney for use at 7 months at $15 each. It's not really the same as renting or transferring, since each come with their own pros and cons.

You're confusing me. The original question was about renting RCI exchanges off ebay.

Follow the quote arrows. I was asking about a phrase Amy5000 used, and supersnoop answered my question clearly.

OK, I was trying to tie the question into the theme of the thread and thought you might be asking what the difference was between the OP vs one time use or renting points.
