I am looking into renting DVC points for a family vacation in October. I am wondering if there are risks involved in renting from a personal party vs. a DVC rental company.
In either case, the reservation is being made by a DVC member. By using a rental broker, you may have an additional level of protection since the member will not receive all of the rental payment until you have arrived at the resort and, with most personal rentals the final payment will be expected well before arrival.
Over the years, there have been very few rentals via the DIS DVC Rent/Trade Board where the renter had no reservation at arrival and David's has always been able to provide accommodations for guests who reserved thru them.
I would certainly suggest reviewing the rental suggestions in the **How to use this Board** thread on the Rent/Trade - especially those discussing the rental process.

What you are calling a DVC rental company is just a matchmaker. They match up a member with someone who wants a reservation. They provide administrative oversight, but they usually do not own the points that are used for the reservation.
