Advice on Priceline or Hotwire

Has anyone used sites like Priceline or Hotwire to book rental cars? Is it best to look on these sites closer to the time you need the rental? I'd appreciate any and all advice. Thanks.

I have used Priceline, twice for two trips. I actually like to use them, since I pay up front, & most of the paper work is done. You get charged as soon as you are excepted before your trip, and you don't get charged on your credit card when you home(at the end of your trip)

Last Nov, I got Hertz (off site) with Priceline, & this coming Nov, Priceline gave me Alamo which is at the airport. I have gotten better prices by searching myself. This Feb I booked National, at a great price (with all the codes), & Priceline, would not give me a cheaper price.
