Advice Needed: my curly long hair + FL Humidity = disaster

My hair is very curly (usually rather soft) and goes into tight curls in Florida heat. The worst thing I can do is try to brush it or it becomes a poofball of frizz. I have tried several products but, to be honest, they all feel oily or gunky on my head, so I prefer a hat over feeling like my hair is dirty. I'd rather have clean tight curls than an oily mess.
I try to take a few nice pictures in the morning and just grin and bare it the rest of the day.

Miss Frizzhead here!

i have tried everything and always end up pulling it back.

this last trip i brought my trusty flat iron and it worked great!!

we went in may when we had the monsoon rains too!

In the same boat. Big, thick hair that goes crazy in FL. Try Living Proof, sold at Sephora. It's new. Don't be fooled, the bottle is small but works big miracles! I LOVE IT!!!!

I read that it's not a myth to rinse your hair with cold water at the end of a shower to keep it shiny and the cuticle closed.

I use Aveda's Be Curly line and I really like it. It's not crunchy/wet looking which I hate! I also mix in their Confixor and it helps with the frizz. Good Luck. I know I'll need it in August! :goodvibes

I know this is probably a silly question but...

I need advice from those who have curly hair. What product(s) do you use to combat the frizz created by the Florida in July/August humidity? I have problems at home with my curly hair and it only gets worse when I go to WDW. I have tried a lot of product and most of it doesn't seem to work, so was looking for advice and tips.

Other than shaving my head or donning a hat what do you to keep your hair from poofing out and frizzing up?

Thank you!

ponytails and caps work! As far as products, I use Bumble and Bumble products. Curl creme & the curl concious shampoo & conditioner even though I flat iron my hair. They work really well with control whether you wear it curly or straight.

There is a product that is hard to find that works well with my curly hair. It is not cheap! It is called "it's a 10" leave in conditioner. I also use Joico K-Pak Moisture

every product i've seen posted are the best options. k-pak is an awesome line, and i've heard great things about deva curls, and It's A 10. i also use the paul mitchell skinny serums.

it's true then when you rinse with cold water the cuticle stays cold

(thats why at salons, if you get high/low lights, they rinse with cold so the colours don't mix together in the cuticles of your hair shaft)

I've always just used a ton of gel (like the 80s were coming back in a big way) which seems to help a lot, but I think I'm going to defer to Lynn in the future, because her hair on vacation looks better than my hair IRL. ;)

Great topic! My hair always looks like a brillo pad during the summer. I will have to check out some of the products that have been listed.

Public Service Message from a Former Frizzy/Curly Hair

I too have frizzy/curly hair and the summer is not my friend with the humidity. Lucky to have 3 good hair days all summer. BUT I did something last year that was truly LIFE CHANGING. It is pretty expensive, but it was worth it to feel good about my hair every day last summer -- even with a month at the beach. It is called Keratin process by Frank Coppola. You have to have it done at the salon. Your hair will be soft, frizz free and so easy to maintain. I can not say enough good things about this treatment.
Best of luck to you all I know what you go thru!

I don't have any advice but just wanted to let you know I feel your pain. I have just a very little amount of natural curl in my hair but when I was in WDW it stayed frizzy. I mean it was standing up all over my head. Personally, I didn't worry about it, I was on vacation.

I have very wavy hair not really curly and I use a mousse for curly hair (suave) it seems to controls the frizzes. I sorta towel dry and blow dry for a min. just to get the excess water out, then mousse and go.
During the day I pull it up in a messy bun it my favorite because after a few rides it's gonna be messy anyways!;) or a ponytail with cute Disney hair band.::MinnieMo

I have hair that can look about like Kramer's from the old Seinfeld show. It's like it will slither right up into the sky searching for moisture on its own, and I feel like a big dandelion puff. I have fought with my hair for years and years, thrown brushes at the mirror, cried, you name it. Plus, I live in the south, where humidity is a given.

A few years ago, I went to a new hairstylist, and he used a flat iron on me. I thought "whatever" as I had had flat irons in the past that never did much once I was in the elements. Well, the day wore on, and my hair stayed straight. It even rained (which normally would have me looking like Bozo the clown's sister) and my hair stayed straight. I RAN to that hairstylist, begging him to find me my own flat iron like he used. $90 lighter, I was the proud owner of my own CHI iron. I haven't had a bad hair day since. It's got some sort of voodoo magic in it that I cannot explain. It's NOT like a flat iron you'd buy at Walmart or Target, it's ...well, magic. I've tested my voodoo magic flat iron in WDW and was thrilled to find my hair looked great.

Obviously I can't say enough good things about the CHI iron. I can flick it around to make waves if I don't want to be totally straight, too.

ETA: my hair is baby fine and insanely curly/frizzy normally, a few inches past my shoulders.

Hi there! I have super curly, thick hair that can get frizzy in 5 seconds flat! I was turned onto this great line of products called DevaCurl. It is simply the best! They have a cleanser (they do not call it shampoo) and a conditioner that are great. They also have a gel called Arc Angel which is better for humdity and Set it Free is their de-frizzer. I do not love their leave in conditioner, I find it drying. You can find these products at Ulta or online at DevaCurl.com.

With all of that said, I do feel that Florida humidity is excessive. When is is over 80% humidity in my town in Ohio, I use the Catwalk Curls rock Curl Amplifier as a styling product. It is hands down the best severehumidity product. However, it is SUPER sticky! I do not like the rest of the line and I only use the Catwalk stuff when it's super humid, but it is a miracle worker!!

Check this website out: curlygirl.com. It has a lot of tips, starting with rinsing your hair with cold water! Good luck!

I have the same problem in humidity, I have very long, curly, frizzy hair which I can get to look halfway decent with products or straightening when the weather is humidity free. When it's not, forget it, I really don't even bother, I just put it up and accept the fact that I look awful! :rotfl:

Maybe I will try some of the products you all suggested, I would love to be able to wear my hair down a few days when I go to WDW, or even straighten it without having it frizz up the second I step out the door!

Both my kids have seriously curly hair, as they are biracial. The strands are like my straight hair, but kinky curly. The Deva products are the BEST, but so is Pantene, and much cheaper. Just leave ANY conditioner in curly hair (don't wash it out!) in the humidity & it should stay manageable. Also don't wash it with shampoo - I know that sounds weird, but it just dries it out. Curly hair NEEDS MOISTURE. We actually got that advice from someone on the bus at WDW when my son was 2 & I didn't believe them! Their son was blond & blue eyed with a head full of beautiful curls. We have traveled to many tropical islands over the years & since learning how to treat curly hair have not had any trouble.

I have tried inexpensive products and expensive ones. The only combination that works for me is Fizz Ease Mousse and Confixor (by Aveda). THose 2 together guarantee me frizz free curls.

Ponytail. For the parks, I'm too lazy to do the flat iron. I just get up, wash my hair and pull it back.

On vacation, it is a pony tail and a hat. I could spend hours straightening my hair, but the minute I go outside I can see that I have wasted my time.
