Advice from P.I. alumni...

Hey guys, I have a question for you.

I got accepted into a professional internship at Walt Disney World for Spring '09, and coincidentally, my parents have a place rented in Mt. Dora for that same time period. I'm guessing that it would be about a 40 min. commute to work, but if I stayed with them, I'd save on rent/groceries. My question is: how much would I be missing out on if I didn't stay in the Disney housing?

I don't think Disney offers housing to PI's.

actually, housing is offered to the PI's. . .in the past it's been at northbridge, but someone in the facebook group got an e-mail today about it being in the CP housing. . .

I've noticed that a lot of PIs do not stay in the Northbridge housing that Disney offers, so my opinion is that, no, you wouldn't be missing out on much there. The upside is you'd save money as long as oil prices don't do anything crazy.

The downside is that living so far away might limit the social opportunities you'd have by living with other PIs, (in Disney housing or not) meeting their friends, being close to the parks on days off, etc. So in part, it depends on your personality and what you're looking to get out of the experience.

I'm a big fan of living close to work and Mt Dora is a little far away, but then again Northbridge or any other place you find wouldn't likely be next door, either.

Is that answer wishy-washy enough for you?

((i think that PI's that aren't management will be in CP housing though. . .)) and that would put you "away from the action"

also, I'm gonna bet that oil prices are gonna sky rocket in january. . .so if you could live in CP housing. . .and utilize the bus system. . .that could save some serious money....

unless, of course, your PI role isn't located in one of the theme parks or resorts. For example, I'm going to be in Celebration and there isn't (currently) a bus that runs out there.

My experience with CP housing is that if you have a chance not to live there, you're better off.

advice....

dont stay in disney housing. save your sanity and be free. PIs live all over the place, you are likely to remain friends among the people you work with more than your living situation.

Example, I live in Coral Cay, I know there are many MANY PIs here. I saw them when we first all got here but everyone has kinda stuck to the people they live with. So if you are worried about socializing dont worry about, you'll be too busy anyway

Mt Dora is probably closer to an hour drive from WDW, if there's no traffic. If there's traffic, it's a commute that could easily take you 1:30
