I should start by clarifying, by "North", I really mean between Kingston, Ottawa and Algonquin Park.

My husband and I are talking about making the move out there. We've gone back and forth between BC and up north but we decided to go with Ontario. We currently live in St Catharines (20 mins from Niagara Falls) so its easier for family if we're a little closer.

Basically, what we want is land (10-20 acres but we're open to more) close to a small-ish village (1500-3000 people) with hopefully some water access (lake, river...whatever!). Since my DH is going to be a long distance truck driver, its important to me to be near a village that has the basic amenities as well as good schools for our girls (14 & 9).

If anyone lives out that way, I would LOVE to hear your thoughts. The good and the bad!

Perhaps you could look in Lanark County. There are many, many lakes and rivers throughout the County. Also you won't be too far from Ottawa. Towns within the County are Perth, Almonte and Carleton Place. Perth is a lovely village but has all the amenities of a small town (population approx 5000). Carleton Place is booming and has the Mississippi Lake adjacent to it. Beckwith Township (just south of Carleton Place has much room for growth). If you're looking for something more woodsy, country-rural then Lanark Highlands Township is rugged and yet beautiful. High schools are in Almonte, Perth and Carleton Place while there are 13 elementary schools in both towns and villages. The school board is Upper Canada District School Board (ucdsb.on.ca) Hope this helps.

Hubby and I moved from St. Catharines (after living there our whole lives) to the big TO to work. We both have good jobs there but are definitely more small town minded. So, we looked and looked and found and bought in Brooklin. It is technically north Whitby. On some ID it says Whitby, some says Brooklin. Anyway, moving on... Brooklin is considered to be a "bedroom community". The biggest employer is the grocery store and the population is about 15 000. I am 8 minutes from Walmart but I have to drive by cows to get there... so all in all it works out really well, and is exactly what we are looking for. It also has both new regular and French schools. The only area it really lacks in is the "water" area. However, we do have a beach at Lake Simcoe in Orillia which is under an hour driving distance.

Anyway, good luck in your search!!!!!!!!!!!!
