I'm having issues. Today, and lately, I've been lashing out at my family/friends getting angry easily with them. Even if they ask simple questions. Then today, i started randomly crying, and been having major mood swings. Then during lacrosse I couldnt focus. I just wanted to leave and go lay somewhere. I'm not sick. I've been feeling alone, not wanted, scared, depressed even. I do soemthings to myself(that katie knows about) and i know its bad. But i can't help it. I just wanted to know if anyone else here knows anyone like this? What does it mean? Could I be depressed? Some sort of Bipolar disorder? Please, help. I'm desperate.

it sounds like you might be mildly depressed. def. not bipolar though.

Like somedays, I'm totally fine, then others I'm just like i said before in the post above.

No, I don't think you're bipolar. My little sis was just diagnosed and you definitely do not fit the bill.
As for depression, its a possibility. Is there any chance your mom could get you into your doctor? He/she can do a depression screening, and prescribe meds if needed.

Hang in there!

Btw, can you talk to someone about this???? Like an adult??

bipolar isn't a "one day i'm fine" then "the next i'm sad" sort of thing.

i don't even think you have major depression (this goes on for months and months sometimes even years and is a very very deep state of depression rarely diagnosed in those under 18) but i def. think that if you could talk to your parents, or even just a guidance counselor, it might help the situation.

if you do choose to go to a therapist, you need to see a CHILDREN'S psychologist. not a general practitioner or god forbid a nurse practitioner.

this isn't a great idea for children and teenagers. its better to see a specialist than a gen. pract. for a child's psychological needs.

the medication on the market for depression, even the fda approved medication has not been tested on children and can cause very dangerous and volatile situations. (black box labels?)

why wouldn't a pediatrician help? not just like a family practice or something. and i didn't know that about kids and depression meds. interesting.

its just interesting, because you see all these mentally ill kids on meds (who are watched very closely with blood tests, ect) and then someone with depression it could harm them? If she needed them though, it would be worth it.

the reason is that pediatricians aren't trained to work with intense brain anatomy and probably aren't going to be necessarily informed about what taking certain medication can do to a small brain. but that doesn't stop them from prescribing medication that they probably don't fully understand (because none of us really know the long term effects of children on medication, because up until recently no child would have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, ever.)

this is one of my soap box issues. if your foot is broken, you wouldn't go to a dentist. go to someone who specializes in what you need. your gen. prac can definitely give you a referral though. but they shouldn't give you that kind of intense medication therapy.

and children/teens are also one of the most non-medication compliant groups out there. (meaning they forget to take their medicine at the same time every day, which with this kind of medicine can result in serious outcomes, like suicide.)

ETA
many gen pract can over diagnose too, which is very dangerous. they take the "well if the medication takes away the symptom, the problem is gone" route. which is simply far too dangerous to do with small, undeveloped brains.

Have you started your menstrual cycle yet? If you have, are they ever irregular?

Sorry if that's too personal, but your menstrual cycle can have more effect on you than you think. It could be just plain old PMS that's making you feel that way.

This.

As well as see if you can get an appt. with a doctor who specializes in this. I went to an "adult" doctor when I was having problems(the same that you are) & I was 16/17. They did not prescribe me any medication because it was mild enough that it was not needed. Just simply talking to an outside source helped me.

This is what I thought of at first too.

If not, then maybe you could talk to your parents about seeing a therapist?

My friend has/had depression and she was seeing a therapist about once a week and started feeling a whole lot better, so she quit going. Now she's starting to feel depressed again so she's thinking about going back. She says it really helps.

This is the exact thing I thought of. I used to get like that, but the pill stopped it for the most part (the first month was worse than it had ever been without it, but then it got way better).

So if you're really worried about the mood part, maybe you could try birth control.

That's what I was thinking

sonya its fine, and thats not it. trust me, heh.

rachel first of all i want to give you this -->

:)

i agree with most of the above posts. you should talk to someone about this, and don't be embarrassed about it its not your fault. i would tell your parents about it to set up a doctors appt. because it could be something serious and could get worse.

call me any time you need, i lovee youu gurraaah!

I'm the same way, it's constant up's and down's. But it's been like this since about... March for me. This semester of school has been really hard, and I've been nothing but mean to my mother, mean to my best guy friend...

I think it's just learning to control your temper and thinking positively. I haven't learned how to do it yet, I'm very negative, hence what causes the anger issues. Talk to some people about it, and try to go have fun. Having fun is the best 'cure' for me. I like having something to look forward to.
I'm really hoping I'll get out of this bout, and I'll go back to being the hyper random creepy girl I was.
I kind of need to make friends, and the angry ***** thing isn't working out.

i cannot stress the importance of positive self talk. the things you say about yourself in your head are really important!

when people are put in a cat scan, and told to read a script of negative self statements out loud, parts of their brain darken! these same parts are very related to depression feelings. when the same person is given a script of positive self talk, those dark regions light up, the same way medication would cause them to become active again.
