Well, I knew that I was in trouble last week when Corey's old friend from back home was getting her to help her to find a new car because they didn't have internet at their home right now. So, Corey started trying to help her with details on various cars that would get better gas milage than her SUV. Their search went on for a couple of days and finally her old friend ended up with a brand new Mazda Speed3. Corey gets the new car bug pretty easily, but she had said that she was going to drive her F-150 forever and as much money as she sunk into custom camo seat covers, camo interior goodies, custom trailer hitch goodies, spray in bed liner, bed cover, and such, I was pretty sure that she would keep it forever, until gas prices got to $3.95 a gallon and her friend got her to really look at how much her vehicle was costing her to operate.
During the past week Corey wrestled with the thought of trading in her 4 door "room on wheels" for something that would get better than 13 mpg. She said that whatever she bought would have to be something that she really loved. She looked at convertibles, but most all of the ones on the market right now have a V6 and that just eats gas about as bad as her truck, so that was a no go. We rode around last night looking at cars all over town. She finally decided that of all things the Honda Civic Coupe was most likely to meet her gas milage needs and be "cool" enough for her to not feel like she was settling for something that she really didn't want.
So, we headed north to the big mall sprawl car dealerships because the Honda dealers closer to us are run by some real jerks. Corey took a Civic for a test drive and she really liked how it handled and of course 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway is awesome compared to her truck. She wasn't going to make a deal today, because she had need for her truck on Monday, but as we sat talking to the sales guy about coming back on Tuesday to make a deal for something, Corey took notice of the totally tricked out Red Honda Civic EX Coupe with Sport Appearance Package sitting nearby. It looked like a sports car instead of just another boring 2 door. She sat in it just before we left. I told her that was one sexy car. She agreed. It had the moon roof that she wanted so much and a kick buns stereo system too. She popped the trunk and decided that her luggage would fit just fine in there, and once she saw that, she immediately said, "I want this one." So, with that, she called her Dad and told him that he would need to come down for the stuff that she was going to bring up to him on Monday. After that was squared away, we headed home to clean out the truck and then headed back up north. We arrived there at 7pm and after haggle-fest with Corey playing ticked off "I am not happy about my trade-in value" girl and me turning the tables on the sales guy with his own admission that the car was tricked out to generate sales and had been there for 3 weeks without a bite thus they should come down on the price of the car because it had been generating sales for them for 3 weeks and it's advertising value was a write off at this point. So, indeed they did come down more, we gave them $1000 more up front and while we did lose more money on the trade in than Corey would have liked, it's only a matter of time before the dealerships here stop taking big trucks and SUV's in trade all together, so we feel blessed to have made the deal that we were able to make today. Corey got the promotional financing rate that expired today too, so overall, I think we made a kick butt deal on a beautiful machine. By 10pm, we were finally able to have dinner at Olive Garden.
Corey has named the new car, Jessica Rabbit, because it's the same shade of red as her dress and it's just as sexy.
I am also pleased to announce that Corey will be driving us to Disney in December! Her car actually beats my car by a couple of mpg on the hwy, so since her car is a bit larger than mine and does a bit better on gas, I finally get to go to Disney World without having to drive the whole long way!
