Well, I knew that I was in trouble last week when Corey's old friend from back home was getting her to help her to find a new car because they didn't have internet at their home right now. So, Corey started trying to help her with details on various cars that would get better gas milage than her SUV. Their search went on for a couple of days and finally her old friend ended up with a brand new Mazda Speed3. Corey gets the new car bug pretty easily, but she had said that she was going to drive her F-150 forever and as much money as she sunk into custom camo seat covers, camo interior goodies, custom trailer hitch goodies, spray in bed liner, bed cover, and such, I was pretty sure that she would keep it forever, until gas prices got to $3.95 a gallon and her friend got her to really look at how much her vehicle was costing her to operate.

During the past week Corey wrestled with the thought of trading in her 4 door "room on wheels" for something that would get better than 13 mpg. She said that whatever she bought would have to be something that she really loved. She looked at convertibles, but most all of the ones on the market right now have a V6 and that just eats gas about as bad as her truck, so that was a no go. We rode around last night looking at cars all over town. She finally decided that of all things the Honda Civic Coupe was most likely to meet her gas milage needs and be "cool" enough for her to not feel like she was settling for something that she really didn't want.

So, we headed north to the big mall sprawl car dealerships because the Honda dealers closer to us are run by some real jerks. Corey took a Civic for a test drive and she really liked how it handled and of course 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway is awesome compared to her truck. She wasn't going to make a deal today, because she had need for her truck on Monday, but as we sat talking to the sales guy about coming back on Tuesday to make a deal for something, Corey took notice of the totally tricked out Red Honda Civic EX Coupe with Sport Appearance Package sitting nearby. It looked like a sports car instead of just another boring 2 door. She sat in it just before we left. I told her that was one sexy car. She agreed. It had the moon roof that she wanted so much and a kick buns stereo system too. She popped the trunk and decided that her luggage would fit just fine in there, and once she saw that, she immediately said, "I want this one." So, with that, she called her Dad and told him that he would need to come down for the stuff that she was going to bring up to him on Monday. After that was squared away, we headed home to clean out the truck and then headed back up north. We arrived there at 7pm and after haggle-fest with Corey playing ticked off "I am not happy about my trade-in value" girl and me turning the tables on the sales guy with his own admission that the car was tricked out to generate sales and had been there for 3 weeks without a bite thus they should come down on the price of the car because it had been generating sales for them for 3 weeks and it's advertising value was a write off at this point. So, indeed they did come down more, we gave them $1000 more up front and while we did lose more money on the trade in than Corey would have liked, it's only a matter of time before the dealerships here stop taking big trucks and SUV's in trade all together, so we feel blessed to have made the deal that we were able to make today. Corey got the promotional financing rate that expired today too, so overall, I think we made a kick butt deal on a beautiful machine. By 10pm, we were finally able to have dinner at Olive Garden.

Corey has named the new car, Jessica Rabbit, because it's the same shade of red as her dress and it's just as sexy. :woohoo:

I am also pleased to announce that Corey will be driving us to Disney in December! Her car actually beats my car by a couple of mpg on the hwy, so since her car is a bit larger than mine and does a bit better on gas, I finally get to go to Disney World without having to drive the whole long way! :woohoo:

Ah! New cars! LOVE having a new one, just don't like the buying process! It will be awhile (a loooooong while :teeth: ) before we add a new car to our world.

Hope you and Corey enjoy the new ride!

The Honda will last forever too...which is a great thing. I hate haggling at car dealers, you just can't be afraid to walk away, but you also have to be realistic, and look at what your offering. SUVs and Trucks are very hard to push right now, so the fact the were even willing to take it is amazing.

We went from a 16 MPG Lincoln that we totaled in an accident (bad situation) in December to a 22 MPG Volvo S80. It's amazing what an additional 6 MPG does to your fuel usage. And highway is even better, difference is about 10 MPG. Fortunately for us we had a lot of equity in our Lincoln so we didn't have to deal with a trade in and had a lot of cash to work with (due to the insurance company totalling the car). The unfortunate part we only had about 4 weeks to buy a car, which seems like a lot, but isn't when you hadn't been looking to begin with, so we had to start fresh, so we didn't have a lot of time to haggle. In the end we got the Volvo for about $7,000 under retail and then we put some cash down, which all things considered wasn't a bad price.

My dear Linda and Corey,

Thank you for sharing your car shopping experience. I'm at the start of replacing a 1996 Monte Carlo so your story made me go  . I wish I could just pay someone to do it for me.

Welcome to the Honda Family. I currently drive a 90' Civic that kicks butt. I have less then 50k original miles on it. Only problem the AC isn't working.

Congrats, Corey! :yay:

DH has a 2005 Honda Civic. We bought it because he used to have a Ford Ranger and those do NOT crash well! Since he goes to work at 2 AM every day while the drunks are out he needs a car with decent crash ratings. He had an Accord for years and really liked it, but the Civic is nice and it gets good gas mileage.

Congrats!

I loved the whole buying process when I bought my Odyssey a few years ago. I emailed all the Honda dealerships within 3 hours of here, told them exactly what I wanted in a van (and didn't want), and asked if they had it or could get it and exactly what it would cost me, including all fees and taxes. I basically had the dealerships in a bidding war. :) I did lots of research on the internet as far as what I should be paying, checked the inventory at various dealerships, etc. I let them all know that I was very serious and would buy from whichever place gave me the best price, service, etc. I found a dealership that I really liked about an hour away that had the exact van I wanted coming in. We agreed on a price, I got it confirmed in an email, and we went and purchased it. All the paperwork was done before we got there. He told me that it was the cheapest they'd ever sold that van (with those options) for. I've been responsible for 2 other vehicle purchases, but using the internet makes it so much easier.

I just got a new car about a month ago as well and love it - a 2008 VW Jetta, also tricked out with various bells and whistles. It had just come off the truck and still had the wrapping paper on it, that's how new it was. It's also my first black car ever.

The car sounds great! I had an Accord for years and loved that car. i traded it 2 years ago for a small SUV, and I do miss it occasionally!
My best advice to anyone car shopping, is to check out something like edmunds.com to get the true price you should reasonably pay for a car, you can also find out the fair trade for you own car and walk in with confidence as to the price you will pay.
also don't discuss financing or trade til you agree on the price of the new car!
can you tell i am experienced with this??
when hubby bought his camry toyota was very easy to work with, he said what he wanted to pay, they said fair price we can do that, then they discussed the trade (he traded a ford truck too)..........
i did this when i bought the accord too, but honda made me work for the deal, lots of haggling, in the end i got what i wanted but man they were tough!
but when i traded the accord for the suv it was easy again, i said what i wanted, and i actually got a better deal than what i asked for.
i hate car shopping and i refuse to haggle anymore, if the suv wouldn't have been at the price i wanted i was prepared to walk , because i had the accord that i loved anyway.

ok i went off on my own little story here:rotfl:
enjoy jessica rabbit , she sounds too cool!!!!

michael i love your car! jetta's are a nice looking car!

Ahhh the glory of a new car! Yes you are lucky that they even took the truck as a trade in. Trucks and big SUV's are not gonna be taken soon that is for sure. You may get half of the blue book value of it if you are lucky!

I have an 01 Silverado that is paid for and I only live 12 miles from my job, as opposed to 30, now that I have moved into a new condo.

However; I really want the new Toyota Camry Hybrid. I was sitting next to one the other day at a red light thinking geeze, they are burning no gas right now, and my V8 just cost me a buck sitting here at this light. :lmao:

But it will be several years before I get anything new as my DP just got a new VW Passat.

Oh and where are pics of that sexy car? :confused3

We've got the Lexus RX Hybrid - we love it:lovestruc.
But when we first got it - we had it for 2 days and hit a moose!

Holy Smokes Batman, that looks like a Moose in the road, watch out! :rotfl2:

Sorry but that is what I thought of when you said you hit a moose. Sorry to hear about that, and after 2 days, I would have been crying that is for sure.

Jessica Rabbit looks like a speeding ticket waiting to happen!

Congrats! :cool1:
