Adventures by Disney - 2015 Waiting List...

OK, so I was curious about this trip, so I called ABD. The lovely Vacationista gave me all the dates and the opening rate for the Amazon/Galapagos trip (sorry, I forgot to ask about kids' prices!). I think I'm going to pass on this trip for now (the only Adults Only is not until January, 2016!) but it does look cool! :thumbsup2

When you say single supplement are you saying for one person?! I also spoke with a Vacationista and she didn't say anything about at price difference for one person instead of 2...

Adventures by Disney bases their pricing on "per person based on double occupancy".

If you are single guest traveling alone, you will definitely pay the single supplement which usually equates to approximately 150% of the "per person based on double occupancy" price.

This is true with cruise lines, including DCL, as well.

Thanks! So... say I book for one person, can I add a second at a later date and get the current double occupancy rate (when paying the second deposit upon change of party)?

Sorry for all of the questions...

As long as there is space / room type available, this can be done.

If the "current" rate has gone up by the time the second person is added, wouldn't you be paying the higher rate (at least for the second person)?

Yes, that's the downside of traveling solo. You'll almost always pay a single supplement for tours or cruises, etc. Although ABD's single supplement is not as bad as a lot I've seen. I've found that the ABDs I've booked, the single supplement has calculated out to an additional 40% over the per person double occupancy price. DCL used to be an extra 50%, and is now an extra 100% (so you're paying the same amount as 2 people, minus port fees). Usually ABD will only quote you the price with single supplement if you ask for it (if you tell them you're traveling alone).

The only exception to this is the ABD add-ons to DCL cruises. Since the accommodations (and any possible single supplement) are already included in your cruise fare, that's not reflected in the price of the add-on. So the cost of the add-on itself is just plain per person.

The Ecuador/Galapagos trip looks the same. I just had the Amazon/Galapagos trip quoted for us (family of 3) and it's $22647, about $7600 pp. :0 it looks very interesting though sailing on a riverboat. What I like about the trip is, you stay on land in the Galapagos and take day excursions on a boat. The water could be bumpy on a ship so that's one good plus for those who get sea sick. Not very comfortable trying to sleep at night.

The Amazon part of the trip looks interesting, but, unless I'm misreading the itinerary, it appears that all of the activities for the Galapagos section of the trip are on Santa Cruz, with one yacht excursion to a small nearby island, Santa Fe. All of the islands are dramatically different and have unique species of animals and birds. Of all the islands we visited, I found Santa Cruz to be the least interesting, although it's definitely worth visiting. I think it would be a shame to go to the Galapagos and see so little. tufbuf, you've been there before though, right? So that would be okay. But for a once in a lifetime trip to the Galapagos, I wouldn't choose this trip. Land based Galapagos tours tend to be much less expensive than cruises too, so the price of the ABD iseems awfully high. But I'm sure the Amazon cruise drives up the price. Maybe two cruises would have made the trip too expensive to be easily marketable.

Thanks, Bobo912! That's *really* good information to know!

After being disappointed that our ABD plans didn't work out this summer, tonight I booked a Mother-Daughter WDW trip for July and a family vacation for the three of us in August to Disney Aulani! Never been to Hawaii, so we are excited. Still wish we could be traveling with ABD for our 3rd ABD, but we'll try again next year!

DD will turn 21 during the Aulani trip, so she can enjoy a few "island cocktails" with us! She already is deciding which excursions she is dragging DH on! I am sitting on the beach with my mai tai and my book! :hippie:

Now that you mentioned it, I read the itinerary in detail. True, the Galapagos excursion being lodged on land limits the exposure to the different islands. It looks more like getting a taste of the Galapagos. I think it's a good option though for people who easily gets seasick since the Galapagos waters can be rough. The waves were pretty bad on our last night and one member in the group got horribly seasick.

I also checked out the Ecuador/Galapagos trip and I believe they made some modifications. The ship is different, for one. And it does not include Samta Fe island. The tortoise reserve was our last stop before returning to Quito and now it's the first stop. It also looks like there isn't a lot of snorkeling as before. I have to check if we went to Genovesa island.

We only had one night where the water was choppy, but, from past experience on big cruise ships, I knew I would need to take Dramamine. I thought I would be okay any time we were off the ship, but I discovered on our first snorkeling expedition that bobbing around on the surface of the water also makes me sick. Thank goodness I didn't throw up. How embarrassing that would have been!

DCL now charges the 2 person rate for a single.. except for port taxes and stuff like that.

After much discussion we have narrowed our choices for Australia to ABD and another tour operator. Has anyone done the Australia tour? Can you convince me why ABD would be the better choice?

It might help if you mentioned who the other operator was. It's hard to tell why something is superior to an unknown. :)

The other operator is Globus. It's either the 12 day ABD tour with an additional 3 days in Melbourne after the tour ends or a 19 day Globus tour that includes New Zealand but not Tasmania. Some of the inclusions on the ABD tour are extra on Globus but there is a possibility of a half day Lord of the Rings tour in New Zealand. I am really wavering between the two. I hope someone who has done the ADB tour can give me a little more insight. :confused3
