I have a trip planned for the winter but I'm tempted to try and make a quick trip to see what the hullabaloo is about with the new system and all before going during the holiday crush. The thing that gives me pause is I know getting medical care on vacation can be a bit tricky and with new issues on the scene I'm stuck firmly on the fence. I do see that there is a partnership with Advent Health and that it looks like it's set up for the needs of travelers but what I can't tell is if people feel it's really supportive. Anyone on here use any of the functions, like prescription delivery? My Dr is encouraging me to go out into the world because treatments now exist for me and said if I should test positive all I would need to do is share images of my results and he'd take care of my care, what a big relief. Ok, so that's a huge weight lifted as long as the place I go is stocked well and will help me get what is needed. I'm an optimist and want so much to just jump in but really need to know I have a safety net so I'm asking the general public, anyone need services from this facility/partnership for yourself or your family and what was your experience?

Are you in an HMO type plan?

I needed to visit an urgent care on trips in 2018 and 2019 (2018 for my Mom with a sinus infection 2019 for both of us for upper respiratory infections). Both times I went to the front desk of the resort to ask for information so I could Uber to somewhere. They gave me a pamphlet for Centra Care (which is now part of AdventHealth). There was a phone number to call and they sent a van to pick us up to take us over to the urgent care location. We had waits both times, but were seen and they filled the rxs right there for us. And then took us back to wherever we wanted to go in the van. It was actually pretty easy overall. Billed our insurance and everything.

Haven’t used the on-site services from Advent, but did want to mention that there is a very new ER nearby, that we thought was great. Super new, clean, were seen right away, tests and scans were quick and they even provided copies of everything I needed to take home to our doctors when I asked for it (hospitals never do this, you have to request later, have it sent directly to the doctor, and it will get lost). When we had an issue in Aug 2021 that required an ER, I spoke with our doctor who knew about this new ER and recommended it, so glad we went there. It was a pretty quick Uber for us (we didn’t need an ambulance, thankfully). They are a full service ER and can do way more than an urgent care (we needed chest MRI), but they are not a hospital, so if you need to be admitted, you would be transferred to a hospital.

The one we went to was AdventHealth Palm Parkway ER.

Also, there is a new similar ER being built right near WDW that should open in 2023.

Just for the folks who always like to be prepared, I think these are good options.

Is that cost reimbursable under your plan?
I don't really know but probably since I move between 2 states often and am covered in both states I would think I'd be ok. Good point though, I'll call and ask about the medications tomorrow to make sure they are covered but it would stand to reason that since most innovations made to get this situation under control have fallen into a space of exceptions I'd expect this will too. Still, it's easy enough to check tomorrow so I know for certain, thanks for the thought.

Wherever you decide to seek medical care while on vacation, you should check with your insurance provider to confirm what facilities/providers are 'in network.' Sometimes on certain health plans, a provider or facility is considered in network, but it's a Tier 2 'in network,' meaning that your co-insurance is at a higher rate than a Tier 1 provider.

Are you asking about treatment for a positive Covid test while on vacation? Or are you asking about general health care for a family who had...an earache, stomach bug, twisted ankle, etc.? Answers may be different, maybe not.

It sounds as though you are asking about the Covid prescription treatments for those at high risk. My BIL took that (at home) this winter. He developed minor symptoms, tested at home, called his doctor for the prescription; a PCR test to confirm the home test wasn't available for a couple of days but in the meantime his doctor prescribed one of the pill treatments and he was able to start same day after the home test. If on vacation, you may just need to reach your own doctor to call in the prescription - which it sounds as though he is more than willing to do for you. Therefore, more than needing the healthcare, you simply should research what pharmacies stock those treatments and are participating with your insurance. Have that information on hard when you travel, so if needed you can call your doctor even from your resort room. Turner Drug delivers to the resorts but I don't think they deal with insurance; there may be other delivery options now as well so you wouldn't really need to leave your room. Buy a couple of home tests to take with you if it eases your mind.

I can't really comment on specifics. As far as the reputation of Advent Health is concerned, they seem to be top-notch in our area.
