Well, admittedly I am biased 
since my husband and I married 4 years ago when his daughter was 13 and mine was 6 (he and I were 41 and 36, respectively). A few bumps but no major disasters thus far! A few benefits I see - some emotional, some financial:
- My daughter is growing up with a very active, involved dad, which she did not have before.
- My stepdaughter has another positive female role model in her life who can expose her to experiences she otherwise wouldn't have.
- Since neither of our first marriages worked out, it's nice to know that we are now showing our girls an example of a respectful, loving marriage.
- We wanted my husband to stay home, so with marriage my health insurance covers him.
- One set of household expenses
- Discounts on insurance
- Spousal immunity in court (just kidding )
It doesn't work out for everyone, but to say there's no upside is a bit extreme IMHO.
