Advantage to buying small contracts?

Within the next year to year and a half, I plan on adding on DVC points (25-50; not sure at this point). Since my home resort is BWV, what would the advantage be to purchasing those 25-50 points at another resort? I'd still have the home booking advantage at BWV, so the smaller contract would not give me a booking advantage at another resort. Why do people buy small contracts at other resorts besides their home?

On a related question, I have 170 points at BWV. If I buy another 30 at OKW, will I have access to the full 200 at BWV at the 11 month booking window?

They do it to get the home resort booking advantage at another resort. Since only the points purchased at a resort can be used to book at 11 months, many members just bank & borrow to get the number of points they need for a particular stay.

For example, if you buy 50 points at OKW, you could book a 150 point OKW vacation at 11 months every third year or a 100 point OKW vacation every other year.

No - at 11 months you can only use the 170 BWV points. You'd have to wait until the 7 month window opens to use the 30 OKW points at BWV (or any DVC resort besides OKW).

Best wishes -

Ahhh! Thank you for explaining that. I didn't understand it either. But it makes sense if you only want to stay at another resort maybe every 3 years. :)

I thought only your dominent contract (meaning the one that you own the most points on) was the one that dictated the 11 month booking window? So if I own 170 at BWV and 30 at OKW, I can book 11 months out at either resort, using the points that I own at that resort? I was under the impression that I could only book 11 months out at BWV since that's where I owned the majority of my points.

I'm a newbie DVCer with a ton of questions. :)

No, points only have home resort booking status at their own resort. The 170 BWV points will have home resort priveledge at BWV, but the 25 points at OKW would be the only ones that would have home resort priviledge there. That is the reason we purchased our add-on at our original home resort. I wanted to have access to all 380 at the same time. I figured if I wanted to book elsewhere, I would take my chances at teh 7 month window.

One of the advantages is that if you want to sell, they are easily done because the ultimate cost is low.

Nope, it's the home resort for the points in question. If you own 25 pts at each of the 7 resorts, you only have home 11 month priority for those 25 pts, up to 75 total if you bank and borrow.
