This is the first time we will attend one of the advanced movie screenings. Can anyone tell me if you are allowed to take you cell phone into the movies? I know it is says no recording devices but wasn't sure how strict they were with smart phones.

We are going, also! Given the strict wording in the confirmation regarding recording devices -- I'm betting they will confiscate cell phones and hold them in the lobby during the movie. That is what we've experienced at various D23 events and screenings.

Edited to add quote from confirmation email:
NO RECORDING. The screening will be monitored for unauthorized recording. By attending, you agree not to bring any video or audio recording devices (including, without limitation, cameras) into the venue and you consent to a physical search of your belongings and person for recording devices. If you attempt to enter with a recording device, you will be denied admission. If you attempt to use a recording device during this screening, you consent to your immediate removal from the venue and forfeiture of your recording device and its contents. Any attempted unauthorized recording will be reported to law enforcement and may subject you to criminal and civil liability. We reserve the right to pursue any and all available remedies at law and in equity for any unauthorized recording and/or copyright infringement, including without limitation statutory damages of up to $150,000 per violation, and nothing contained in this notice shall be construed to limit our available remedies and/or legal recourse. You assume all risks of personal injury arising from or incidental to attending the screening, whether occurring prior to, during, or after the event. Further, by attending you grant permission to WDSMP, its licensees, licensors, affiliates and agents, to record and utilize your name, voice and likeness to publicize the screening and promote the movie. Closed captioning, assistive listening, and descriptive video services will not be available on the pre-release version of the movie.

REMEMBER: NO RECORDING DEVICES OF ANY KIND (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION MOBILE DEVICES, CAMERAS, LAPTOPS, IPADS, ETC.) PERMITTED!

I plan to leave my cell phone in the car.

They usually have a cellphone check in table. They put your phone in a paper bag, stapled closed with a number ticket, and give you a matching number ticket.

Yep! They are very strict. They will collect all phones.

We went to the Doctor Strange screening last year and they did not take our phones but were very clear that they would appreciate people not using them. The honor system. I mean they are giving you a free advanced screening, drinks, popcorn, some small swag gifts why would you be a jerk and record the movie.

Well isn't it going to be released early anyway by the hackers?

I have not been to a DVC pre-screening, but have been to others, my cousin belongs to some sort of screening group. They made us put our phones in the car, and kept a close eye out during the film.

The version we are attending at AMC, Disneyland, will be in 'RealD 3D' -- so attempts personal recording would likely be fruitless.

Confiscating cell phones seems like overkill. Studios usually use heightened security measures for unfinished films (focus group screenings) or promotional events like D23 / Comic Con which are held many months before the finished product is scheduled to debut. They'll undoubtedly monitor the audience for recording devices, but it would require epic negligence on Disney's part for an audience member to get a quality capture during a packed preview screening.

This film will launch in 4000 theaters a week from now. Movies leak online when a projectionist in Small Town USA--or some random foreign country--record it playing to an empty house.

We went to a Moana pre screening last November at the Poly, and they took all phones and put them in plastic baggies with our names on them. We collected them easily afterwards.

Answering for the Anaheim experience today: All electronics were collected before entering the theatre. Furthermore, our bags were inspected and we were wanded. So, they were serious: no electronics in the theatre.

That said, my Apple Watch remained on my wrist. I wasn't attempting to be difficult -- but it hadn't occurred to me to surrender my watch with our phones. I received no less than three snarky (?) comments concerning my watch before the day was done but no-one asked to take it away. Phew! (Yes, theatre goers, I did quiet the watch in 'Theatre mode' to mute all sounds and keep the screen dark.)

Was this early screening for DVC members only OR for anyone? I did see a general notice somewhere but did not receive the USUAL direct DVC email notice for the preview.

We went to this screening last weekend and they took all cell phones and smart watches. it was in 3D and it was AWESOME!!

Howdy neighbor! This was a "DVC Member Magic" -- but the invitation was clear to state, "You've been randomly selected ..."
It seems, from the full house at the theatre, that the DVC Member roster for SoCal has hit the threshold where invitations are now "selectively randomized" rather than "broadcast."

Sure hope we both are "randomly selected" for the same event some time in the near future!
