Adults dressing up as characters on formal/semi-formal night

Hypothetical question: I know it's quite common for adults to dress up in costumes on pirate night, during Halloween cruises, etc., but I'm curious about whether it's allowed on other nights such as form/semi-formal nights? For example, Secret Honey releases pretty fancy Disney Halloween costumes (Belle: https://item.rakuten.co.jp/secrethoney/7st776/, Anna: https://item.rakuten.co.jp/secrethoney/3st783/, Different Anna: https://item.rakuten.co.jp/secrethoney/3st782/, Live-Action Cinderella: https://item.rakuten.co.jp/secrethoney/3st781/). These definitely would not be allowed at the parks, but what about on cruises? I searched for info and couldn't find anything. I don't think I'd do it myself, but I'm just really curious now what staff would do if an adult decided to wear something like that on a cruise! What do you think?

I do not think there would be an issue with this at all, as long as you are not trying to portray yourself as a crew member.

I have never seen many adults doing it for formal nights or semi-formal nights at all.
Girls, yes, but not women.

These are beautiful dresses. Unfortunately, I think they are probably too close to the character costumes. There are actual meet and greets on the ships and other passengers may confuse you with an actual character. You could TRY it, but I would be prepared to be told that you have to change.

DisneyBounding is certainly okay, but these are very close to their actual outfits.

I agree with PP comments and will say that I have never seen an adult dressed up in this type of costume on formal or semi formal nights.

However, I also suspect that, in reality, these costumes are probably not as "nice" or as close to actual character costumes as the pictures show.

When we sailed Hawaii in 2015, there was a young woman maybe early twenties and she had a different Minnie costume on every night at dinner.
I also saw her on the pool deck in other replica Minnie costumes taking pics with the characters, no one stopped her that I could see.

The stopping is in regards to a guest so resembling a character that other guests are asking for pictures. THAT is verboten in any Disney park (actually adults in costumes other than MNSSHP is verboten in Disney parks) and on the cruise line.

That said, while I've seen some "bounding" (hate that term) happening, I have never seen adults in full-out princess wear at dinner. (I have not been on a Halloween cruise, so I don't know what happens there. But if it does I'd imagine it's only for that night.)

I've seen a couple that was Disney bounding in a prince/princess dress once during a formal night. I thought it looked wonderful and I'm sure the pictures where great as well. I think the cast members on the cruises are more lenient when it comes to dressing up as characters on the ships. I say go for it!

Was this an Asian lady? If so, I think I saw here on a recent Panama Canal cruise too!

The princess are all pretty young in their early 20”s or younger. Unless you’re really young or look really young I can’t see being confused for one. I’m not really sure why an adult women would want to dress up like a princess, but I have seen it on the ships. I’ve never confused any of them for the real deal for various reasons.

On the Star Wars cruises there were quite a few amazing costumes that some people might mistake for a real character (like a Bobba Fett, for example). But again, that was for one day and it's expected that people will be dressing up in costumes. For a day when you're supposed to dress up, but not in costume, the rules might be different. I think the key might be whether people would expect you to be a CM if you're dressed as a princess. For a Halloween party, they wouldn't, but when no one else is dressing up, that confusion would be embarrassing at the very least.

I have seen adults dressed as Jack Sparrow that so closely resembled Johnny Depp you did a double take. They were mistaken a few times as cast members ready for pictures, but were just guests. I didn't see any cast members telling them they couldn't do it -- but they were spot on with their costuming!

As long as they are not portraying themselves to be "the" Jack Sparrow (not signing autographs, for example) then it's generally allowed on DCL. But, if they set themselves up as a photo location and autographs, it's a no-go.

On the EBPC, I couldn't sleep one night, so I just wondered around the ship. In the atrium was a lady, early to mid 40's dressed as Tinkerbell being photographed around the little mermaid statue (Ariel) and the stair cases (the Wonder still had 2 staircases at that time). Then she left and came back as Cinderella and more photos. They didn't see me. The next morning, going through the canal, she was on deck 10 with her family. The photographer was part of the family (DH?). Very strange. But at two in the morning, she wasn't fooling anyone as being a CM.

On pirate night we like to go all out. I start in the lounge and load up on the golden chocolate coins. As we make our way to the MDR, I pass out the golden coins to all the kids that I see. It takes us about 45 minutes to get to the MDR because of this. I am quite often asked to pose for pictures with the kids. At first I was uncomfortable but after several cruises it get easier. After dinner we go to guest services to reload on the candy and then walk the ship until pirate time. No one has ever discouraged us from getting pictures taken and a few times it was mentioned that it was nice not to have to stand in line for that. We do not look like any Disney characters, in fact if I looked like any character it would most closely resemble the Bacardi Rum Captain Morgan pirate.

That is the key. You do not look like Disney Characters. Where you would have a problem is if you looked like Jack Sparrow.

What is Disney bounding?

It is when you dress in the colors and some clothing of the characters but not exact costumes. Just google Disney Bounding images and you will see tons of pics.

DisneyBounding is an alternative form of cosplay in which the participant dresses up as an iconic Disney character in casual contemporary fashion by assembling a color-coordinated outfit that is subtly evocative of the aforementioned character.
