My almost eight year old hasn't lost a single baby tooth yet. I wanted to check and see if any were loose and one of the bottom two is slightly loose but his adult tooth is coming up behind it instead of from under it. So far behind it is going to be like two rows of teeth. He has a dentist appt. already made in late December. Has anyone else had this happen and does this mean braces in his future? Do I need to push the dentist appt up if I can? Of course I find this after hours on a Friday and now I'm worried. Thanks.

This isn't all that unusual. Especially for lower teeth. My DD had her 4 upper front teeth come in behind her baby teeth. We had to have the baby teeth pulled. And the dentist gave her a supply of tongue depressor sticks to place behind her adult teeth during sitting around times, levering it against the lower teeth to encourage the uppers to move into position. Worked fine!

:cutie:

I had adult teeth come in behind 2 different baby teeth and they both grew in crooked. I think if they can pull the baby tooth out before the damage is done theres a chance it could grow in straight.

I would encourage him to wiggle the baby teeth that are in front of the big teeth and see if he can help them to loosen before the scheduled dentist appointment. At the appointment, if there's still no progress, then see what the dentist says.

DD10 just went for her cleaning yesterday. I can see that her 2 adult incisors are coming in and her baby ones are still there. The dentist also said that 2 of her molars are coming in, too.

I told her 2 weeks ago to begin to wiggle the incisors, but she hasn't so the dentist wanted to schedule an extraction appointment for the 4 teeth. I said wait and let me see if I can get her to pull them first.

On the way home yesterday, she pulled one of the molars. Arghh!! So easy and saved me at least the cost of pulling that one tooth. I will now "ride" her until she pulls the other 3.

Since your son has never lost a tooth, you may need to teach him what to do.

We just went through this with DD6. Both her bottom teeth came in behind her baby ones, which were just slightly loose. She tried to get them more loose but we ended up having to take her to the dentist and he recommended having them pulled. She did great and they have now moved into the right position.

My son had this happen with several teeth, and they moved into the correct position, except one.

So we had just a partial brace, called a Johnny Jumper, put on that tooth. It moved in less than 12 weeks, and the brace came off.

My daughter had that- I used to kid her that she looked like a shark! Food would get caught between the two layers of teeth! They ended up pulling 10 teeth in one appointment. They would have ever fallen out, when they were pulling them they were shattering like eggshells, they had to end up picking pieces of the tooth out of the gums-it was like little fragments just stuck in there-what a mess it was. Didn't hurt her getting it done though! She ended up needing braces but we knew that from the time she was little and her front teeth were bucking!

We called DD shark tooth. She had double rows top and bottom

None of my front teeth (the incisors) came out on their own. My mom would notice an odd little bump on my gums, and take me to the dentist -- and he'd tell her that it was a permanent tooth. Then he'd pull the baby tooth, and have to work at it. They weren't even a little bit loose!

The only one that was any problem was one cuspid, that came in on the outside of the baby tooth. I think it may have been the THIRD tooth in that location, because we all thought it was some sort of bone spur. The dentist had the devil's own time getting the baby tooth out, and the permanent cuspid never really did drop completely into place; it's still a little short and a little bit out of line. (This was all back in the days when putting braces on your kids was as much about conspicuous consumption as it was about dental care.)

This happened to me. It was a long time ago, so I am sure what is done about it may be different today. I never 'lost' a single baby tooth. As the adult teeth started coming in the dentist pulled the baby teeth. At one point I had 4 baby teeth pulled to let the adult teeth come in.

I never needed braces, my teeth are perfectly straight. I do have one tooth, the very first adult tooth that came down, that is a bit crooked but the rest are perfectly straight. Oddly enough it is the third tooth in from my molars so noone every really sees the space.

I had one adult tooth come in under a molar, pushing the baby tooth sideways. I finally had a dentist pull it and it only hurt a little bit. It was stuck tight to the gums and that little section of gum fell off as well.

Be careful about pulling teeth early. I still have one baby tooth for life. There was never an adult tooth to come in.

I had ten of my baby teeth pulled for this reason.

DS has had six pulled already and is having three more pulled next week becuse the permanents are being forced towards the side of this gums and it would be better of they can come in straighter. He is almost fourteen and I think those may be the last of his baby teeth.

I would try to move the dental paint, eat up and tell the, what is going on when you do so they cn chedule some extra time to take the baby teeth if they think it necessary. It might save you a lot in braces down the road. The one tooth that we did not see coming inside ways in time to get the baby tooth out of there is the one would could not gt moved back and might never one up unless he has braces.

Ha ha, and I thought I was an original when I called it "shark teeth." :rotfl2: I guess great minds do think alike. ;)

DS's teeth did the same thing. We did have some pulled. And we had a referral with an orthodontist (at about 8). She said, we'll wait and see, bring him back annually. At 11, we started braces. He's about 18 months in now.

Good Luck, OP. Just give the dentist a call on Monday and let them make the call about keeping the current appointment or bumping it up.
They may or may not pull the baby teeth (and if they do, it's not bad at all), but you don't have to panic. You can also try to wiggle the baby tooth a bit between now and then. You might be able to work it out on your own or at least loosen it to make the job quicker/easier if the dentist pulls it.

As far as braces, you've got time to figure it out. They may move into place on their own, or they may need help, but you can work out that plan as you go along (and save for it, if necessary). :flower3:

My daughter had shark teeth too. The dentist pulled one and the rest my DD wiggled and pulled out herself. She did try to push on it with a craft stick, but it didn't work. Now she has several on the top that will need braces and she has two babies yet. Her bottom row looks ok now, but she has two that still need to come in.

Once all the adults come in then the dentist will refer an orthodontist. She will need them though, so we've been preparing for the cost.

I'm glad our dentist doesn't wait until all the baby teeth are gone before sending us to the orthodontist! My kids are late teethers (my 2 oldest lost their last baby tooth in 8th grade). However, all have been seen by the orthodontist by the 3rd grade. Three needed expanders - by middle school, it would've been too late. Dd11 has been xrayed, and goes every 6 months, and the older she gets, the more they're thinking she might not need them. :cool1:

They don't go on until almost all of the baby teeth are gone, but they still get seen every 6 months or so (no charge).

Ds9 has BAD shark teeth. He just got molded for his expander, but our orthodontist really prefers having the baby teeth fall out on their own. He did xray, and if the baby teeth are in danger of causing any trauma to the adult teeth, he will have them pulled.

Thanks. I'm glad to know this has happened and is a fixable issue. I thought it was strange that out of my three children his baby teeth lasted the longest when he got his first teeth the earliest. My first two didn't get a tooth until after their first birthday but lost one by their seventh birthday. This one got his first tooth at 9 months and is turning 8 in a couple of weeks with all of his baby teeth. I checked to how loose the baby teeth are and one wiggles ever so slightly, none of the others do. I showed him how to wiggle the one but he said it really really hurts. I will try to get an earlier appt. Thanks again.

My younger dd, one day, told my sister "look I hate two sets of teeth". That was eight years ago. She had to have all her baby teeth pulled. The dentist said she had really long roots.

Since then she had bottom braces then an expander then a full set of braces ending with a retainer.
