Have any of you developed new allergies as you have gotten older? I have always had allergies pretty bad, but no food related allergies. And a few years ago my doctor diagnosed me with asthma. But now I think I have developed a food allergy. Is that possible, or am I just crazy?

Yesterday I had strawberries on my pancakes at breakfast. Within a short period of time I was scratching myself like crazy. Especially my arms, neck, and face. My skin feels all rough and bumpy. Does this sound like an allergy, or is it maybe my hormones going crazy as I get older? I noticed this the same thing last month, and I had strawberries then too.

Ideas? Besides I am crazy?

I developed my Celiac Disease (can't eat gluten) at the age of 21.
My outdoor allergies depend on where I am living. At college in Indiana my allergies went crazy in the spring but I was fine at home in Massachusetts.
Now that I am in Rhode Island my allergies again have gone crazy during the spring.

I had always been "sensitive" to certain latex products but never actually allergic. I am now Anaphylactic and have to carry an epi pen.

So I think its totally possible!

Sorrry youre having this problem. I would probably go in and be tested if I were you.

I never had allergies until I had kids. And in the past few years, they've gotten a lot worse. I also now have asthma.

So far, no food allergies. I became allergic to my cat a couple years ago. Some hand soaps. The rest are seasonal.

I was diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy and an egg allergy when I was 18

i was diagnosed with a shellfish allergy a few months ago (I'm 20)

In the past 5 years (since I was 15) I have been diagnosed with new chemical alleriges (parabens, lanolin, sodium benzoate), new environmental allergies (horses, cats, trees) and food allergies (eggs, peanuts and shellfish)

Sure, as I get older lots of surprises happen. Don't eat strawberries anymore.;)

I developed allergies to meds for sure. And all of a sudden I had to cross foods/drinks off my list because of reflux.

Itchiness and hives (the bumps you were describing) are definitely signs of an allergic reaction. You should definitely be careful from here on out because allergic reactions can get worse every time you are exposed to the allergen. A bad allergic reaction could affect your ability to breath.

Unfortunately, people can develop allergies later in life.

I developed allergies to soy, corn, peas, almonds, and sesame when I was 18-20. I never had any problems with food before, now I can’t even smell popcorn without turning bright red (or worse). It is quite annoying because I know what I’m missing! :headache:

Sounds like a food allergies. A few years ago I developed food allergies. I'm allergic to peanut and tree nuts, crab, other types of seafood I wouldn't eat anyway. Some other stuff too that I forget. My main problems are the nuts and seafood. I was also allergic to almonds but I recently outgrew that one. Which is nice because I love chocolate covered almonds. My environmental allergies also exploded a few years ago. Tons of shots have helped but not wiped it out. My allergist said that when I moved to the south that the new pollens overloaded my system and cause me to become allergic to almost everything.

I have lived in the same place all of my life. Same pollen, so I should be used to it right? I developed allergies to certain pollens and grass when I was around 40. No food allergies, but boy the grass and pollen kills me. Same thing with hubby. So no, you aren't crazy.

Sounds like my mothers side of the family. My mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and great uncle (all from the same line) developed food allergies later in life.

Ginger, pineapple, shellfish, sesame seeds, nuts, and a few other things.

Can't wait to see what I develop an allergy to as I get older.

Growing up, I've always known that I was allergic to two antibiotics. However, I recently discovered that I'm allergic to cats. I found this out when I went to three of my friend's houses. They all have cats. Everytime I would visit, My eyes would water and get really itchy, my skin would itch like crazy, and I found it a little hard to breathe.

It's not like this a problem for me though, considering the fact that I have always hated cats. :cutie:

Right around 22 I started getting pretty sick - every time I ate. It took 3years and numerous ER visits to figure out it was corn. I'd get to the hospital dehydrated and they'd start an IV - with dextrose (corn). Twice my heart stopped. I'm 6 feet tall and at one point I weighed in at 116 pounds.

Stopping the corn was easy - its everything else its in that's hard! If you do determine you're allergic, check for other names and read ingredients.

And here I thought I was the only one! I'm so annoyed with the allergy thing right now. I'm breaking out in hives all the time. I carry Benedryl in my purse. I've never had any issues before, now I do. And I'll be 40 in a few short months. I'm going to get tested soon, to see what all the culprits are.

It is not uncommon at all. An allergy happens when you build up enough histamines to cause a reaction, that could be the second time you were exposed to it or the 2,000,000th time. You can't have an allergic reaction the first time you are exposed to something. My seasonal allergies developed in my mid 30's and have progressively gotten worse.
