My DS14 has ADD and the older I get, the more I think I have ADD as well. I have a hard time focusing and will often realize that 5-6 hours have passed and I have accomplished nothing. I start one cleaning job, just to find something that belongs in another room and then start cleaning that room. In the end, all my rooms are cleaned a little and no room is more than half done. At night, my mind is just running wild with what I should have done, what I will do tomorrow, etc. and I have a hard time winding down. And let's not even talk about disorganization, LOL

My son was on Concerta, but is doing fine without any meds right now. So, I am thinking I may try taking the Concerta for a week and see if it makes a difference. If so, I will go to the doctor and get a scrip.

Anyone with adult ADD? Advice?

DH had the same revelation. While having DS tested.... . He is on Concerta right now and so is DS. Although DH suspects he needs his dosage increased....and I concur ;)

There was an online quiz that DH took - of course we didn't put much stock in it - only showed that he was on the right track. He scored a 99...anything over a 35 was at risk for ADD. He was shocked - I wasn't. :rotfl:

Good luck!

ETA: I would not just "take Concerta for a week" to test it - I would go see a Dr.. There are all sorts of dosages and his might not be the right one.

But, DH's doctor did say that you'll know when you start taking the meds. Because if you have it - the stimulant meds will actually "take the edge off" - but if you don't have it and take the meds, you'll see all the side effects of taking a stimulant....bouncing off the walls, hyper, trouble sleeping, heart palpitations...

Both my kids have ADHD. I suspect I am the guilty gene donor. I have managed to get through life quite well but I am poorly organized and sometimes have to work very hard to focus. Please, though, don't experiment with stimulant medications without a prescription. The side effects can be very serious and you should be monitored. Also, they are legally considered a controlled substance.

I am pretty sure I have adult onset ADD. I am so easily distracted. It just isn't funny. lol....

For your sleep problem, try taking some melotonin about a half hour before you go to bed. It is all natural and isn't addictive. You can buy it at walmart if you don't have a good herbal store near you. There are also teas and herbs for ADD if you want to go that route for that too. The person working at the herbal store should be able to help find you something that would work for you.

Whatever you do DO NOT take any medication. If you feel that you do have ADD then make an appointment with the doctor and go from there. You don't mention your age, but with a child at 14 you may also want to consider peri-menopause symptoms(which can begin as young as your mid/late 30's)....they are very similar. (been there, done that myself :upsidedow )

I heard the same thing about melotonin. I've heard it's really good.

DH and DS both had sleep issues early on, but they worked through them and their bodies finally adjusted. For DH it took about 2-3 weeks, and a little longer for DS.

I am 38, and this has been going on for years. I just now am putting it together. I will def. go to the doctor, as I am due for a physical anyway.

I've dealt with ADD for quite a while, although it has been quite some time since I used any sort of perscription medication for the condition. I have had trouble sleeping for quite a while, but I do find that Melatonin does seem to help with that. I've also eliminated Caffeine from my diet as well, since I felt it would significantly exacarbate the problem whenever I used it. Even with the Melatonin supplements, I still have occasional trouble sleeping, and have always been something of a night owl (Not that I'm not a morning person or anything like that... After all, 2am is still morning, right?)

You can get big 300-count bottles of the Melatonin at Costco pretty cheap.

I believe I have it as I can be going to do one thing, get distracted, think of something else... and so forth.... And then come back and go, "drat. I meant to do x".

Recently, I was diagnosed with A. A. A. D. D. - Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it manifests:
I decide to wash my car.

As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail on
the hall table.

I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.

I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the
trash can under the table, and notice that the trash can is
full.

So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out
the trash first.

But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I
take out the trash anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my checkbook off the table, and see that there is only
one check left

My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go to my desk
where I find the can of Coke that I had been dri nking.

I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the
Coke aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over.

I see that the Coke is getting warm, and I decide I should put
it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the coke a vase of flowers on
the counter catches my eye--they need to be watered.

I set the Coke down on the counter, and I discover my reading
glasses that I've been searching for all morning.

I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going
to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container
with water and suddenly I spot the TV remote.
Someone left it on the kitchen table.

I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I will be
looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on
the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where
it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers.

I splash some water on the flowers, but most of it spills on the
floor.
So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels
and wipe up the spill.

Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to
do.

At the end of the day: the car isn't washed, the bills aren't
paid, there is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter, the
flowers aren't watered, there is still only one check in my
checkbook, I can't find the remote, I can't find my glasses,
and I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

Then when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm
really baffled because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really
tired.

I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some
help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail.

I work in a private school specializing in children with special needs. Someone sent this to me and I though it cute.
