I'm a new newbie to all things UO and WDW being a west coaster. I am filled up with planning for WDW which we are doing for 6 days in late April--I have ADRs for each night there. We (only 2 adults) then have 2 days at UO staying on site (Monday and Tuesday, May 3,4) and having express pass. I am hoping to simply wing it for those 2 days as far as dining. Is this a mistake? Are there not to be missed dining experiences? Should I try to get ADR's? I didn't even know these existed at UO until I read something somewhere last week.

These days, CityWalk restaurants technically require reservations, though if you walk up, they might not turn you away. All of the restaurants are easy to book. There's a link on each individual restaurant's page on the UO website to make reservations.
As far as recommended restaurants, my favorites in CityWalk are Bigfire, Vivo, and the Cowfish, with an honorable mention to Toothsome. Toothsome will be the toughest reservation of those to get; I've gotten reservations within a couple of hours at the others. At the resorts, the Palm (Hard Rock) and Bice (Portofino) are very good.

I don't think ADR is as necessary at Universal, but if you are looking for a special or upscale experience you should try to get a reservation. Inside the park I like Mythos, but there are a lot of decent quick dining experiences. Agree with Ross Kratter regarding the City Walk options. Toothsome the food is okay - you can get the desserts/shakes without eating there, just going to the much shorter ice cream/sweets lines, and I think they are better than the meals.

I am the opposite on Toothsome. We've really enjoyed the food, and the non-ice cream part of the dessert was really good. But the ice cream was store-brand quality.

Toothsome seems to be the hardest to get, so i would make that in advance. We really enjoyed Lombards and Mythos in the parks and Big Fire outside. I did make a reservation for Cowfish to try this trip, but generally, its pretty easy to book things on the fly at Universal.
