I am staying for 10 days at two disney resorts. On day 7 I am moving to my second resort (poly to AKL). because the way disney does reservations i had to make two reservations. someone advised me that when i go to make my ADR's i can make my adr's for the first reservation then have to actually wait a week to make them for my second reservation since it won't start until 7 days after my arrival.

this makes no sense to me. i am staying 10 consecutive days so i should be able to make +10. will i get penalized because i choose to go to 2 resort in those 10 consecutive days.

Yes, you have to wait for your 180 day mark from your second reservation to make those ADRs even if your stay is consecutive.

2 resort reservations = 2 ADR days

You are not being penalized.
You have 2 unique hotel reservations
You have the "perk" of making ADR's 180+10 for your hotel reservation(s).
This will occur 180+10 days from your check in date to your reservation(s).
This is 2 days for you.
The concept of a single "split stay" in an internet concept. Disney does not see it that way

180+10 is sort of a misnomer.

It is 180+Length of Stay at a Single Resort, up to 10 days.

So, a few use cases:
  • You are booked at a resort for 5 days. On your 180-day mark, you make 5 days of ADRs. Yay.
  • You are booked at a resort for 14 days. On your 180-day mark, you make 10 days of ADRs. You add a day at a time after that to your total of 14 days.
  • You are booked on a split stay of 3/4. On your 180-day mark from the first reservation, you make 3 days of ADRs. Three days later, you make an additional 4 days of ADR (180+4).
  • You are booked on a split stay of 11+4. On your 180-day mark from the first reservation, you make 10 days of ADRs. The next day, you add an 11th day of ADRs. Then, 10 days later, you will be allowed to make the final 4 days based on the 180-day mark for your second booking.
"Split stays" do not exist for Disney's systems. You have two reservations, so you have two ADR eligibility dates.

The resorts are managed separately, so, you aren't staying 10 consecutive days in one resort. You are staying 7 in one and 3 in another. You have two different reservation numbers because you have two different reservations. Think of it this way. If you were to go to, let's say, Philadelphia and you made a 3 night reservation at the Kimpton Monaco followed by a 3 night reservation at the Kimpton Palomar, you would need to follow whatever rules they may have in their hotels. Same chain, two different hotels. Or to make a Disney comparison, let's say you made a reservation for 7 nights on the Fantasy, you would have one date on which you could make excursion, dining, etc. reservations. But if you were to make back-to-back 3 night and 4 night reservations on the Dream (for a total of 7 nights) you would have two different reservations (as you do know at WDW) and two different dates on which you can start making your dining, excursion reservations. So you aren't being penalized. You are just being held to the same rules as everyone else with reservations at a WDW hotel. If you don't like the two different dates, you could make one reservation at one hotel and have one date.
