I went on the WDW website just to play around with the reservation service (our 180 day out mark isn't until Thursday). I clicked on "make a reservation" and I was able to make a reservation at the TRex restaurant in DTD. How? I didn't even have to put in my Disney reservation number. ?

Anyway, am I using the right reservation maker? Help! Thanks.

the only time you need your reservation number is if you are making your reservations 180+10 days. meaning if you are checking in on Sept 1 and you call at your 180 day mark, you can make ADR's for the next 10 days after Sept. 1.
As long as you have a dining confirmation number, you are doing everything right
