I'm dying to try Tonga Toast after seeing so many yummy pictures of it! How hard is it to get into Kona Cafe for breakfast without an ADR (for 3 people)?I can make one if necessary but I'm just wondering if its a restaurant we could get into without one?

It really depends on what time of year you're there and the crowds. Easier than getting into Crystal Palace or CRT for breakfast, I'm sure! We saw people being turned away in January at Kona around 7:45 AM if they didn't have an ADR. And that was weird - because all the tables were not filled! :confused3

PS - you can get Tonga Toast at the Capt. Cook's counter service at the Poly as well.

I can't remember the time, we're talking years here, that we were turned away from Kona without ADRs for breakfast, regardless of season.

If there is somewhere that you would like to try while you are there I definitely recommend it. You can always call and cancel or try to get the times changed but at least if you go ahead and make them you will know you have a spot to eat there. I made my ADR's today for September and couldn't get 3 of them when I wanted them. Chef Mickeys was booked all week for breakfast so we are having to do lunch. Bomas was booked for all the good dinner times and Coral Reef was booked for dinner all week. We worked something out and I am sure will still have a blast but I am glad I have them even if we do have to try to change them. Good Luck! :goodvibes

We had breakfast at Kona for the first time in May. We had an ADR but I had called only about a month ahead. We were there at 9:00 and it appeared to be the end of the breakfast 'rush'. It was pretty full when we got there but as we ate a lot of empty tables opened up and stayed empty.

That said I would definitely make the ADR if you really want to go.

We love Kona, but know we get our Tonga Toast fix at Captain Cooks. Usually sit outside on the patio and find it very enjoyable and much cheaper.

IT's mostly a question of what time. We eat breakfast at Kona every trip and never make ADR's. Most times we're there around 8:30-9:00 and have little or no wait.
HOWEVER--last two trips we got there at our usual time and had waits of 1/2 hour and 45 minutes. While chatting with the hostess while we waited, she told us that in the past year or so (for some reason) the place gets very crowded from about 8:00 until around 10:00.
SO --since waiting 45 minutes for breakfast isn't something we want do do ever again, we're going to bite the bullet and make our ADR's for 9:00. Changing breakfast times isn't an option.

Captain Cooks is the CS restaurant at The Poly they have the "same" Konga toast as The Kona Cafe. So in case you do not obtain a reservation there is a solution to your "Konga Toast fix" ;)

Well, there is Tonga Toast at CC, and similar. But not as good. (According to DH.)
He's not so crazy about TT at CC. And has tried it twice thinking maybe the first time was an off day.
But then after having it in Kona again, he said they aren't the same (to him).
They are the same, but yet they are not.

Many places if you are there at opening you have a chance. Otherwise hard to say.

We had breakfast at Kona in Dec. and while they weren't turning people away there was a 30min wait. This was our day off so thankfully I had made an ADR. I did the same for this Dec.:)
