Adoption Updates

I don't know anything about the process for Guatemala, but wanted to say welcome!!

So our homestudy's at USCIS. The dossier is all but done, and then two huge bumps. Our family doctor is a DO, not an MD. Kaz might not accept his license/med reports. And worse- we found out the agency that did our homestudy no longer has a licensed social worker on staff, so our homestudy isn't valid for Kaz, though it is in our state, and for USCIS. We might have to do the homestudy ALL OVER AGAIN with a new agency. That'll be a lot of $$$$ we didn't plan to spend.

Hi to the new posters! We considered Guatemala- and were basically done with the dossier when we realized it would be very hard to adopt an older boy when our agency handles mainly infants in that country, so we're back to Kazakhstan.

Kim- what's up with the fund raising idea?

Is the SW who did your homestudy still licensed, just not with the agency anymore? If so, then the homestudy should be fine (there are plenty of people who do the homestudy with a SW not affiliated with their agency). If the SW lost the licensure, then you would have to redo it.

Ugh. That doesn't sound good. We are actually looking at Guatamala because of the ease(relatively) of getting a baby. We also like that most babies are placed in foster care instead of an orphange. How old of a child are you looking for? I have several friends that have adopted from different areas of Russia and they have all gotten older children as well. (Just a note of interest not that you would be changing or anything.)

Hi everyone!!

Julie - what homestudy agency did you use? You can PM me if you don't want to post.

As for the fundraising idea... I have a PM and email into Pete and I haven't heard anything yet. I came across this company - http://www.fundcraft.com/docs/quickeasycatalog96dpi.pdf and I was originally going to do this on my own but I thought about it and remembered all the dinner/appetizer/crockpot/chicken/dessert threads that we have going on here. I'm thinking maybe, just maybe, we can get DISers to contribute recipes and do a DIS cookbook. We can sell them here (again, waiting to hear from Pete) and privately. Of course everything sold privately will be completely that person's profits and everything on here (if we are allowed) would be split... I just have to figure out the details.

They are only $2 per book to produce and we can sell them for $12 or $15. I have talked to a few people who have used this company and they have been quite pleased.

Again, I will let everyone know when I hear something :goodvibes

We finally received an update today that our homestudy has been submitted to our agency for final approval, then it's off to Nashville for fingerprints, while we are waiting for USCIS approval we can put our dossier together and hopefully it should arrive in Thailand by the first of September. We are so hopeful that the wait won't be long for our travel invitation since our agency has emailed and spoken to the DSDW (Thai agency that handles all adoptions) about our case. Good luck to everyone else!

I am very happy to report that we finished our profile last week and they will start to be shown to birthmothers this week, so we could be matched at any time! We are so excited to have finally gotten to this stage!!

Best wishes Becky! We were all ready to go right before Thanksgiving 2004 and we held Noah for the first time March 18, 2005!

CONGRATS! That's great news, I bet you're bouncing off the walls!

Good luck

We had our final homestudy meeting this past Sunday, but the homestudy itself probably won't be done for another few weeks or so. I'm so glad yours is done...that's a nice load off your back!!

According to our SW, there are a number of available children right now with the agency that they work with. Some of the other agencies in Korea right now are having a slow down or hold placed on their programs.

Can someone that has already finalized their international adoption please explain to me in very simple language the adoption tax credit? I know the limit is $10,630 and that our adoption must be finalized before I can claim it, but how do you figure out if you qualify? I typed in our info into our 2005 taxes just to see how much difference it would make and it said we weren't eligible, but could carry over the amount to next year. We make WAY less than the amount where the credit is not available or reduced. DH has more taxes taken out of paychek than he should so we always get a refund. How does this credit work?

Your adoption credit amount can't exceed your total tax liability for the year. In other words, you can't use the credit to get more back than you paid in. You can claim next year if you were already getting everything back for this year.

We have accepted a referral!!!! We have accepted a beautiful 14 month old boy from South Korea. Weare thrilled with him. His name is Hyung Suk. We will call him Alexander Hyungsuk. We can hardly believe how perfect he is for us!!!!!!
