My sister went to New Orleans a few weeks ago and worked voluntarily at a call center to help the people that were affected by the hurricane. She was there for a few weeks. She sat down with me and my family tonight and said this year instead of buying gifts within our family this year for Christmas, she would like to adopt a family in New Orleans through the organization that she went down there to volunteer with and give gifts to those families for Christmas. We all loved this idea of helping out families that need it so we are all doing it this year and hopefully will make many children smile during this difficult time. We plan on doing this for several families.

What a nice thing to do for another family.. :goodvibes There is a guy that works with my boyfriend whose family is from NO and they lost their home.. He was able to move here and work for the company and we are planning on adopting them for Thanksgiving and Christmas.. They have one little boy.. It makes me realize how much we take for granted and makes me feel good to do something good for someone else ::MickeyMo

My DH gets about 20 letters from the NYC Post Office and buys for the whole family. I usually do the buying of clothes for the females.

That is such a nice thing to do. Last year, my Marketing class adopted a local family. Each class bought gifts for one member of the family. I was responsible for collecting the money and buying the gifts. I don't know if we are doing this again this year, though.

This is a great idea. No one in our family really "wants" anything. Instead of buying gifts for each other I would love to "adopt" another family.

my aunt & uncle sponsor a child in africa (not sure where) so instead of giving each other gifts this year, we're pooling our money to buy a nanny goat for his family, so they'll always have milk. of course, i already had my grandmother something before i heard about this, so she's getting it anyway, lol.

Our Church does a White Gifts program for the needy/Elderly in our area. This year we are asking other churches to focus on that for us, and we are partnering with a church in NO to provide Christmas for those families instead. We are planning to send gift certificates and have the Sunday school/Youth group kids make cards and crafts to send.
