Adobe Photoshop and CS

Is it just me, or are the "how-to" books not just real helpful??:confused3

Anyway, I wanted to learn to do the vignetting, so I Googled it! You can find out just about anything through Google
! :thumbsup2

I loved this picture of my puppy, but thought a vignette might improve it. Is this an improvement, in your opinion? What suggestions would you make?

Best book I've found: How to cheat in Photoshop Elements.

Also, you could use your Background Eraser and Cloning tools to remove the blue box in the back.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my PE! I never truly understood the meaning of ENDLESS possiblilities before. Have fun!

I have been dying to get my new computer and try out the Photoshop that we bought also, but now I feel really stupid and con't seem to figure it out. I really wanted to be able to edit my photos by removing the color from all but a few things and i can't even find that. Any help for the obviously Photoshop illiterate would be great!

photoshop has a high learning curve, you might want to pick up a photoshop how to book. Also youtube has some videos that might help you get started. just type in "learn photoshop"

Dave pirate:

quick one step is "desaturate" to remove color. It may be in a different place in your program than in mine.

But a really good black and white conversion is an art, using several photoshop tools. THere are many good tutorials. I'm not that good at it and use desaturate often.

this one was not one click.

Google or You Tube 'selective coloring'. That should get you stepping out in the right direction.

The key is to have a good B&W before anything else though.

As mentioned there are tutorials all over the net, just google what you want to do and your program. I have CS4 but have been too lazy to learn it yet and still use PSP. The basic concept is the same. As mentioned above, a good black and white takes a lot of tweaking (try googling Scott Kelby b&w conversion) but if you just want to play and get your feet wet try this:

Bring a copy of your color photo in to your layers palette. Duplicate the photo so you have two layers. Convert the top layer to black and white. (for plain jane just desaturate) In Photoshop you have to use a mask and this is where I'm spoiled because I don't. You'll want to look this part up because I don't know PS well enough to tell you how to activate the mask. On the layer mask on top of the b&W use a "soft" eraser and erase in where you want your color. (The color photo underneath will show through.) Zoom in really tight and get as precise as you can. If you go too far you can erase back in. When you're done merge your layers and "save as."

Thanks for all the replies. I've been busy with the holiday weekend but will try to figure it out this week. Thanks again!!

I have The Missing Manual by Barbara Brundage, and it has lots of good info in it. But I have actually found a LOT more information by googling "photoshop elements 6 free tutorial".

And this site:
http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/index.php
has lots of good ideas/help.

Have fun! I love photoshopping almost as much as I love taking pictures!

the adobe help forums for elements are pretty helpful. Barbara Brundege contributes there. you just go to adobe from the adobe icon or help menu.

I use the Missing Manual books for Dreamweaver and Photoshop and are I think they are better than any of the other instructional books out there.

Help! Just installed Essentials, but I can not access any of the functions. It gives me the error message "The command (command name) is not currently available" each time. Please help me!

Thank you in advance!

Help!! I spent three hours on photoshop and STILL can't figure it out. :confused3 I have two pictures that I want to put together and take out the background for my dd's wedding invitations. It is a pic of a tiara and a marine dress hat. I can email the pics and I would be forever indebted to whoever could help me.
