Adobe Photoshop and CS

Having kids that are students will qualify. I do not know all the details but it should also include non-profits and other things like that. You should check Adobe's site.

Are you sure that you don't want Photoshop Elements? Photoshop CS4 is geared towards graphic artists and professionals. It's much more expensive and harder to use. Elements does everything that most amateur photographers would ever want to do and I think you can buy it for less than $100.

CS4 is the current version. Adobe is very fussy about student versions. Most bookstores will only sell it after confirming that a student is buying it, and even then Adobe does not include a registration number. Adobe issues that after again verifying that the buyer is a student.

The student version also is tagged so Adobe can see if the owner is using the software for commercial purposes.

If you are a student, Phototmatix also has a very generous discount.

Hello Guys !

Design page curves in Adobe Photoshop by yourself. You can do it by many ways. I will describe here an easy way to do it.

Draw a box shape using pen tool. Clicking p will select pen tool in photoshop.
Now you can add editing points to it because its not a regular shape but its editable.
Add points by Add anchor point tool beneath to pen tool in its sub menu, at the corner where you want to curve to appear (e.g. slightly near from top right corner and slightly near right side under top right corner).
Select top right corner by Direct selection tool and drag it inwards.
Add gradients at that corner. Two gradients I suggest. One darker one at top and lighter one, beneath dark gradient by Gradient tool. You are done.
Thanks.

That sounds cool. Could you post some before and after shots to help me understand the effect better?

And welcome to the forum!

Theres too many options and I dont know what I need. These are some of my choices:
Lightroom
Elements
Camera raw

What do I really need? Im new to editing but want to learn do a better job. I have Infranview and gimp and photo explosion right now.

Lightroom will probably do 90-95% of your post processing of images. That is adjustments to the file such as exposure, white balance, etc.j

Elements will do the creative stuff like putting people in other pictures and taking out stuff like lightpoles.

Lightroom and Elements will process RAW images for you.

I was just wondering because eveyone talks about how great photoshop is, and it seems like theres lots more infromation to show me how to use it. Gimp confuses me.

You have to consider the price though. Photoshop is hundreds and Gimp is free.

It is getting a little bit dated, but there is a downloadable book on the Gimp here: http://gimp-savvy.com/BOOK/index.html There are also books you can buy.

So how did you learn how to post process your photos? What books did you read? What would you recommend to start with?

I tried to read a few books, but that did not work. Then, I found a few photoshop and lightroom vidcasts. I learned a lot by seeing how others processed thier images.

A great majority of my photos are post-processed using Lightroom. Many others who use Lightroom also agree that about 95% of their post-processing is done there, and probably only 5% actually needs further, more advanced stuff in either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

A couple years ago, I learned post-processing techniques by reading Scott Kelby's book The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers. It's an excellent book, very easy read, lots of screen caps and examples, and easy to follow along. Here's the link to Amazon.

Another very good book for Lightroom is by Martin Evening: The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book: The Complete Guide for Photographers

If you're looking for books specifically on Photoshop, both these authors also have excellent books about Photoshop:

- Scott Kelby: The Adobe Photoshop CS4 Book for Digital Photographers

- Martin Evening: Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers

Scott Kelby's books are very easy to read and follow along with. You can find all these books at your local bookstore.

Hope that helps! :)

I saw this picture and fell in love with it. I was wondering how to achieve this look in Photoshop. I am a newbie to photoshop :)

You're looking to do two things here: 1) sepia tone, and 2) burn edges.

A quick and dirty way to get sepia tone is to desaturate the image then apply a sepia photo filter via adjustment layer, adjusting the opacity and other settings to taste. That's just one of a million ways; it's not the best, may not be what I'd do, but it's quick and easy.

Next, to burn the edges...in the sample you provided it appears more hand-done, not symmetrical. So, duplicate the layer, on the new layer burn the edges with the burn tool, then use the opacity slider for the new layer until you get what you want. Again, one of a million ways to get burned edges. Not my usual method, but a quick way to get from point A to point B.

I left out other stuff you'd do, like adjust levels or curves, contrast, etc. That's all stuff that you'll do based on the image and how you want it to look.

Now, check out Google for other techniques and enough tutorials to keep you busy for the rest of your life.

what photoshop do you have?
virtual photographer ( free plug in) has a very nice sepia ( so does lightroom)
xero plug in also free has some nice vignette options or lightroom has matts filters ( look in the help for lightroom ) which has some edge darkeners

this link has xero, virtual and some others mendi has some cool stuff as well

That in particular looks like the Old Skool action out of the first Totally Rad Actions set at 100% opacity. The previous posters probably already gave good advice, but I'm almost 100% sure that is what it is.
