Just wondering if there is any difference in the Lightroom student and teacher edition vs the regular edition?

I've got it. It's the same software, they just slap a different label on there and charge you less.

Only differences I'm aware of is that it's not for commercial use, also you may or may not be able to install on more than one machine. IIRC you can install the regular edition on two machines (ie one desktop and one notebook) while their educational editions cannot.

You can install the academic version on 2 machines as well. Unlike Corel and Autodesk, they don't even use special serial numbers for the academic version. It is the exact same software, it just has an academic sticker on the shrink wrap.

Make sure you check the requirements carefully. Grade school students don't qualify. College students and teachers only, I think.

That is not true, I picked up a license this fall with my middle school daughters report card.

It is the same exact software, biggest difference is that you can not upgrade it down the line.

This is true.

I've installed Adobe CS5 and Captivate and wasn't even asked to verify student info. Way back when I was a student the last time, all of the major manufacturers seemed to run you through verification of some sort.

It depends on where you buy from. Some places impose a higher ed restriction, others do not.

From Adobe's education store:
Who is eligible Student and Teacher Edition eligibility

This software may be purchased by:

•University and college students—students enrolled at a higher education institution defined as an accredited public or private university or college (including community, junior, or vocational college) that grants degrees requiring not less than the equivalent of two years of full-time study
•Primary and secondary school students—students enrolled at an accredited public or private primary or secondary school providing full-time instruction
•Faculty and staff—teachers and staff employed by an accredited primary or secondary school or public or private university or college

I picked my copy up at the campus bookstore where they didn't even check ID.

I bought my copy from Amazon and activated it via Adobe's site. They did require a copy of the report card, but that was it.

Really? I didn't have to activate my copy of LR3 at all which honestly surprised me. I just plugged in the serial number provided in the box and all was good. Unlike Photoshop, where they practically want your firstborn just to get into the software.

Maybe they do have different sets of serial numbers out there that go to different stores or something.

That's possible. I purchased one product from Journey Ed and had to provide a whole load of documentation since it was my first semester back in college. The software did require information (Microsoft product).

Meanwhile, everything I've purchased through the campus computer store has not needed anything except entering the product key.

Maybe it was a poor choice of words. I did not get a serial with the software from Amazon. I got it through Adobe after I installed the software. You get to try it for 30 days and I got my seriel before the trial was up.

If you're in business (even part-time), then you should buy the regular version. Then again, too many people in business aren't licensed or insured and think paying taxes is optional. :sad2:
