Ok, all you fellow I-95 drivers...how many will admit they've stopped at South of the Border on the NC/SC border at least once?

And how many of you rush back to the car as fast as you can?

If only Pedro's place was as much fun as his billboards

South of the Border (or as DH & I call it - SOB). What a true jewel. We like to pull in on our way down to WDW, get out of the car & say "Okay kids - WE'RE HERE!!!!" DS, the 1st time, said "You've got to be kiddin!" It's a very Clark Griswald moment for us. :teeth:

SOB is a true highlight in the 95 drive. Haven't done it in 10 years, but at 3 am after a day's driving, those lights as bright as day and the miles of restrooms are a welcome sight. Never been there in the day, so maybe it's a middle of the night thing.

I don't know what it is about that place, but I have never just driven by. Gotta stop everytime. Definately wouldn't stay there, but we got a kick out of it. I believe it's been 12 years since we have driven down, and I doubt I will be doing it soon. With SW fares at $50 each way, I can just about fill the tank in my F150 once for that.

We were extra brave and actually ate there!!! We survived! We did by some fun souvenirs. It is one of those things that we will probably not do again. Just bathroom pitstops!

my parents, aunt, and uncle got stuck in rainstorm driving north about 10 years ago ... couldnt find a room anywhere ... but SOB ... the four of them (60 yrs +) split the honeymoon suite
with heart shaped bed and mirror on the ceiling
not the best night's sleep

...but what are you guys talking about?i've driven to fla and s.c. many, many times and maybe i've seen what you're talking about but i'll need to have my memory jogged.sounds like one of those great state rest stops.am i close?

For all of you who are missing SOB, here's a little something to hold you until that next trip down I-95. Enjoy, Ahhh... the memories:)

Warning, this will make you want to cancel that trip to WDW & go to PedroLand!!!

Stopped once about 10 years ago, never again. The restroom was filthy and stunk to high heaven. The food areas had old food on the table that looked like it had been there for days. I was expecting to see the place filled with vermin. It was definitely bad when we were there. I do find that their signs help break up the long drive, but that is about it. When Pedro says you never saw such a place, he was right on.

Once and only one as a kid we stopped in to satisfy our curiousity about SOB - Yuck! I've never had the urge to stop again.

I remember Pedro actually made you pay to open a stall to use a restroom! This was in the late 70's or early 80's. I cannot imagine who actually vacations there in their motel or campground.

I admit it...we finally pulled in to Pedro's this past Christmas...and pulled right on out again! It was kinda sad as most everything looked "out of business" and had seen better days. I remember passing this as a child in the early 70's and wishing Dad would pull in. My sensible parents said it was a tourist trap and passed on by. With my own family in the early 90's their sensibility stuck with me as we drove by. I guess DH and I are getting daring now that we're in our 40's! It really was sad/disappointing after seeing all the entertaining signs on the way down. Even the little ride section looked like it hadn't been running in years. Well...at least we can say we've been there...or NOT!

Whew after reading these post I am very glad that we did not stop at SOB on our way to/from HHI.

Oh. My. God.

You MUST take at look at that website - it might as well have The Frito Bandito on it!

"pedro got 112 meelion amigos, who stay weeth heem, opp teel now all satisfy come back, send frans...thees make pedro ver' HAPPEE...like for frans come back all time..."

Nope - no stereotypes here, folks - just move along....

Yes, we have stopped out of curiouslty. We wanted to show the kids the definition of tourist trap. We even took pictures. It's all part of Americana- not the best part, but interesting.

Once when I was kid, I think it was in 1972. It was a lot different back then. Same billboards, but as I remember it had like 3 or 4 buildings. Sold nothing but junk, fireworks and nasty food. I think this was the first place that I saw that charged a dime to use the bathroom stall. Haven't been back since. Everytime we drive down my kids say they want to stop. I just say okay, but if you need to use the restroom they will have to pay the stall charge with their own Disney souvenir money. They usually then say "NO WAY, lets keep on going". I figure with inflation the bathroom stall charge has to be up to a couple of bucks by now. Well, at least that is what I tell them. :teeth:

Actually, I think the only improvements over the years is now the bathrooms are free!!
