My friend takes vacations a lot too, they must be expensive. I thought about camping, any advice? can't do a tent

some state parks have lodging that's pretty affordable-in washington there are cabins, tee-pees and yurts for rent. years ago we went to a private lake in california that had some rv trailers-i just checked and they are still pretty reasonable.

Many state parks have cabins, some private campgrounds also.

I see barkley was posting at the same time!
Thank you both. a cabin would be nice :) maybe I could find one and split the costs with my friend

a teepee and a yurt. know the word yurt but what is the difference between the two?

Yes, but OP was looking for a specific income threshold. 300,000 a year would not be considered middle class by anyone's definition. That would put you in about the top 6%.

I know California is expensive, but if anyone making that much can't afford a vacation they are doing something seriously wrong
I agree 100% however some on this forum WOULD consider $300,000 to be middle class, which is my point.

My in-laws have a membership to KOA campgrounds if you know what that is. Now they have a 5th wheel so they look for places that have hookups, places to get rid of waste, etc. They have an RV group they go with and have tons of fun.

If you can go with your friend it will help out on the costs. I've slept in a tent before in a cold October Midwest nights but wouldn't recommend it if you're not into roughin' it (and we had a house we went into for the bathroom lol).

Barkley I'm sure can answer the yurt question, I've never seen one myself

I def. wouldn't consider $300K middle class personally but I do agree with you on varying opinions about income, each place has their own COL, some places are paid more than their COL actually dictates too. I'm vaguely remember someone in the past talking about their home in TN or KY one of the two where it cost substantially less than it would be in my area despite the fact that my area is usually considered one of the most affordable metros. Their income was shockingly low IMO (I just remember thinking that lol) but they had a lot of playing room just because of their area.

a yurt is a circular structure that assembles like a tent-most rentals have beds, some have electrical hookups, some even have small bathrooms-fancier ones are popular with 'glampers'.
This. A yurt is more enclosed than a teepee, and are typically on a platform (I think of teepees as being on the ground). Where we used to go skiing, they had the main lodge, then a yurt next to it. It was a large, enclosed structure that had a heater in it--not quite as warm as the lodge, but plenty comfortable to take off a ski jacket and have lunch. Much cheaper to operate than a full-blown cabin, but also easy to take down. I could see camping in one--I'd prefer a cabin, but a yurt would be a step up from a tent.

income vs. col is a factor where i live b/c of the number of california retirees-esp. those on pensions. there's a considerable difference between the yearly cost of living increase an active employee or life long state resident on a pension receives vs. a california retiree whose col basis is the san francisco bay area or other high cost region.

Yeah those are good points.

just asking b/c 100k gross nets a good chunk more in a state like mine w/no income taxes vs. one like california that's at over 13%. btw-there are good number of people who i guess would be considered by virtue of the 100k dollar figure 'lower middle class' (cuz they don't gross let alone net near that in a year) with paid off mortgages whose homes were not 'dirt cheap' when they purchased them.

Middle Class varies WIDELY depending on where you live. Averages $52,200 - $156,600. So here on a broad forum there could be people making at each extreme and still be middle class. Many folks make over $100,000 and because of where they live and how many children they have live a life closer to the same as someone making $50,000. One should not assume things based on someone's gross income.

AND everyone defines vacation different so say it is camping on peaceful lake, you might be able to go for a total of weeks on end each year BUT if your definition is Disney World or a Cruise you might go once every other year. Very difficult to define vacation for "middle class".

And I understand a conversation on a forum going sideways from what an OP intended, and I get people speak in ways one may not appreciate BUT REPORTING needs to be reserved for truly harmful comments ... not because you don't like the comments.

NOPE. One of the rules is to "Stay on Topic." Many who commented with starting "I make over 100k a year" didn't stay on topic. Comments like the Michael Scott comment are not on topic. I WILL report all those that break the rules, because some are just plain bullies!

May I ask how you get basically free healthcare if you make around $300k a year? We make 1/3 of that, and we pay almost $1000 a month, and have a kiddo with severe special needs. Just curious!

Husband is active duty military. He doesn't make $300k per year (yet), but because our housing allowance is non taxable (and it's $5200 per month), our take home pay is pretty close to $15k/month. It's about $14k.
