So I drove through the Adirondacks on my way from eastern PA to Montreal one year and my impression was.... gasp! I need to spend some time here. So this is the year we're looking into spending a few days. I'm just not sure where to start and will take any and all advice.

Need a location toward the east as we would like our drive to be 5-6 hours. Was looking at Lake George and North Creek, for example.

Want to do mostly outdoor activities, especially hiking and fishing. We want to bring our dog and I am finding a decent selection of pet-friendly hotels. Just need to make sure we have a good selection of pet-friendly activities as well.

This is summer, early July, 3 nights. Mostly looking for good locations and ideas for activities. I'm busily working Google, but I've always had better luck with the more personal advice from Dis travelers. Thanks so much, as always!

I am adding myself to this thread-this is an area we want to explore too-but in our RV :boat:

I'm leaning toward Lake George. I see lots of hiking, things to do, and an affordable, pet-friendly hotel. In your RV you have a lot more options than we do, though!

I live in Plattsburgh--which is about 1 1/2 hours north of Lake George The Adirondacks are beautiful year round!! Lake George is beautiful, and there is alot to do there, but can be very crowded in the summer. What about Lake Placid? They have alot of outdoor activities--plus all the history of the Olympics There is a KOA with cabins and the North Pole campgrounds have cabins. :cool1:

I was years ago and therefore don't remember the exact location but, there is a great Adirondack Museum. It's both indoor and out and has lots of great things-full size steam train, hands on kids activities, a giant Adirondack Chair the whole family can fit in. You'd need to look it up for more details. I sorry I don't remember more!

Blue mountain lake:) and the adirondack museum!! Huge favorite! There is a great hardware store somewhere around there too!

Another vote for Lake Placid! We love that area and its gorgeous scenery. Plenty of places to hike and plenty of other activities. Visiting the Olympic venues is fun and walking around the village is a great way to spend time. You can take a ride on the gondola up to Whiteface Mountain which has breathtaking views.

Lake Saranac is supposed to be fantastic as well. Saratoga Springs is also an option.

Lake Placid! I grew up outside of the ADKs and went to college in Plattsburgh, the area is laid-back and beautiful.

I love all the Lake Placid recommendations. That was the first place I investigated, actually. I have to go back and revisit my research

Don't miss a trip to Au Sable Chasm. You can hike the length of the chasm or take a short float trip.
