Wendy,

I purchased an additional battery for my portable DVD player directly from the manufacturer. I called Samsung's direct number and within 3 days it arrived.

My brother-in-law bought a back-up battery for his and he really likes it. It's a little bulkier, because it's an external back-up battery. He says it works well. It's a Belkin. It just plugs into the DVD player where the power adapter plugs in.

Calvary Mike - - I've been wondering the same thing. A friend of mine said a second battery for her portable DVD player cost over $150 and her player only cost $198. I was wondering if all DVD players' extra batteries cost that much. A neighbor of ours said he thought some players actually had batteries that only were around $40 but he didn't know which players. I really want to buy a player but only if I can purchase an additional battery for a reasonable price (obviously not $150). I fly SW almost every other month to visit my daughter in Vegas and I'd love to be able to watch two movies on that 5-1/2 hour flight! Was your battery reasonable (price)??? If so, I'm on my way to buy a Samsung like yours!! Details please! Thanks!!!!

I also called the manufacturer directly - I think the cost was around $100 - but this was about 2-3 years ago -

Price may be steep, but I'll tell you - It really comes in handy!!

If you have some time in the airport between switching planes, might I suggest finding a power outlet and giving the battery a quick charge? This has worked for us on many flights.

My DVD player was quite expensive ($500). However, I used my rewards dollar so there were no out of pocket expenses. The extra battery was $99 directly from Samsung.

I usually fly United and I found out that most United flights have power ports. They have a web page on their site to tell you which planes do and where they are locted. Usually they are located directly under the middle arm rest.

At Buy_com (sorry, I don't have enough posts yet to post links), they currently have the Energizer ER-DVD Mini ($29.99), ER-DVD ($53.99) or ER-DVD Max ($55.99) with free shipping. I've seen these prices much higher at places like Circuit City and Amazon.

If you go the Energizer's website, you can put in the brand of your portable DVD player and it'll tell you if it's compatible.

The ER-DVD Mini adds up to 3 hours, the ER-DVD adds up to 6 hours and the ER-DVD Max adds up to 8 hours.

Use this somewhat of a link to get an additional 10% off orders over $50. The coupon expires on 8/31/05. You need to replace the "_" with ".".

I can't personally contest to how well these work, but they are made from one of the biggest battery manufacturers. I think I may also get one of these for myself.

Calvery Mike: Thanks for the reply. Sorry - I'm electronically challenged .... you mean you can plug these things in at your seat on some of the airplanes with no charge to you? Do most of the portable DVD players have this capacity or just the expensive ones like yours? We were looking at one of the Eddie Bauer's at Target for about $200. What do you know or think about these? Gosh you sound knowledgeable. I asked the person at Target and they didn't know anything about the players so that was no help and believe it or not, I was asking questions about the battery, etc. at Circuit City and the person there was as dumb as I am about the players. So, I'm really at a disadvantage here.

Some airlines have power ports in the armrests of certain model planes. However, the times we have used this with our laptop, a special adapter was required - it was not a normal two prong plug. The adapter for our laptop cost about $100.

The power port on United flights are similiar to the cigarette plug in your car. Not all United planes have the ports. American Airlines have the power port available on most of their flights. Check seatguru_com for the which airlines and which planes are equipped with them. These use to be only available to First and Business Classes, but it's widely changing. Unfortunately, many of the cheaper airlines (i.e. Southwest) don't have the power ports. And yes, there's no charge to use the ports.

The Eddie Bauer portable DVD players (PE702 & PE802) both come with cigeratte lighter adapters.

Here's one review on the PE702:
Pros: Stylish, very portable, very good battery life; decent sound from the speakers
Cons: Poor flesh tones and deep reds/blues. I've seen better on Toshibas and Zenith models

I returned my first portable player to Target (don't even remember the no-name brand) in favor of the Eddie Bauer (Audiovox) PE702. This little player has a lot going for it. Its sleek exterior complements the overall video and sound quality of the machine. Hook it up to some computer speakers with a subwoofer and you'll think you're in a surround sound movie theater. The sharpness of the display is very good; however, you must be angled perfectly to get the full benefit of its color capabilities and across the screen full color range.

Another nice feature is the "screen mode" button that switches between wide screen and standard (older) formats.

The only complaint I have are the weak reds and tepid flesh tones especially in comparison to a regular television monitor.

Battery life seems to be as advertised...about 2 hours and 45 minutes (give or take).

Mike - - and you can use those batteries you mentioned from Energizer for the Eddie Bauer models you mentioned?

I think after all your help, I might be able to go out and get one and then order one of the Energizer batteries (if they will work with the unit). Those 5-1/2 flights - - I need two movies to get through them and consequently two batteries. And I take it you can recharge those Energizer batteries the same way you recharge the battery that comes with the player??

Thank you so much for all this information!

Just another suggestion that worked for us - We bought a Kawasaki DVD player on clearance from Target - $150 and for the clearance price of $35, I also bought a travel kit to the player. It included a travel bag/straps to hook up to the seat of a car, plug in adaptor & second battery. Don't know how prices would compare but in this case, it was a good deal & works well for us. This was a year or so ago so I just included the prices to show the difference in price between the player & extra battery for us. The second battery is a huge help for the exact reason you mentioned!

Good luck on your search!

But it isn't a cigarette plug like in a car and usually requires a special power adapter. Our airplane adapter cost $100.

I just bought a Minteck 7' DVD Player from Meijers for $79 and it is very good. Has little over 2 hour battery life, picture/sound was very good. It came with the car plug in & remote control. Very happy for the price, it was $139, but it was a one day only sale.

i just went on buy.com to look at the energizer universal batteries and they raised the price of the max battery to $67.99.....just since yesterday!!!

Yes, you're right. I know most portable DVD players come with a car adapter, but I guess I shouldn't assume.
