Adding points: BWV, or GFV Resale vs RIV or CCV Direct

@CR88, that's so exciting! Congratulations!

Did you ever get started on the resale purchase? If so, are you keeping it or rescinding?

Hello all, and thanks for the info, ESPECIALLY the guaranteed week info!! We just finalized our purchase of a guaranteed week 49 contract at Copper Creek!!!! My wife is super excited. We have been going since our Honeymoon in November of 2005, right after Thanksgiving, which was also my wife's first visit. This past trip was trip number 33. I was talked into going to Disney for our honeymoon instead of my first choice, The Riviera Maya, and I wasn't too happy about it. lol. But, happy wife, happy life, so the house of the mouse was our destination. We both fell in love with Disney at Christmas and honestly, we would have been perfectly content to visit that week for the rest of our lives. And now since I will be about 100 yrs old when the contract is up, it may just be that. lol. I can't thank this forum enough for even letting us know there was such a thing as a guaranteed week. There was about a $7k premium over purchasing CCV points resale, but that was for our week of choice, and over the course of 48 years, that worked out to around $145 per year. Ensuring that we can get a week of Disney Christmas at Wilderness Lodge annually was totally worth it.

Yay! Congrats! It sounds as though this purchase has already brought you joy. :-)

Thank you! No, we were in the process of purchasing 55 points direct. I asked if they had any guaranteed weeks remaining specifically week 49 and my DVC agent emailed me back and said that they did and we were early enough in the process to switch from our purchase to the guaranteed week. So, we only inquired about resale to see what our options were. The sites we checked and the agent I talked with had no guaranteed weeks at all and said they don't come across them often. They had a few at GFV that came in but sold quickly. Also, within this thread, another owner who had a guaranteed week also bought direct, so we figured we had to go that route.

Congrats and Welcome Home!! This is why we bought FWs, too, though ours are 47 & 48. We’ll wave to you as we pass each other! (Though if we ever add another FW it may very well be 49).

I think you will be MUCH happier with this option in the long run. 55 points would be frustratingly limiting for what you want to do.

Just wondering what is the week after Thanksgiving? Also, what day of the week does a FW start?

FWs start on a Sunday, so having some extra points to book that Friday and Saturday night before your FW begins is also a good idea!

Most years, the week after Thanksgiving is Week 48. Thanksgiving is Week 47.

Every now and again, Thanksgiving falls in Week 46 (in 2029, 2035, 2040, 2046, 2057, 2063, and 2068, if I’ve done my calculations correctly), which would make the week after Thanksgiving #47 in those years.

Good thing you've been working on procuring those extra points for a Friday and Saturday night!

Are you working to complete the DVC collection? Your signature is amazing!
Ha ha ha, no! At least that’s not *yet* the plan.
DH is still saying he’d like to add PVB and AUL. If we did do that, my completionist personality may kick in. ;-)

In all seriousness, though, we’re unlikely to buy in at all resorts, but we may very well add PVB at least if the right small point Sep UY contract comes along. :-)

Polynesian is one of my home resorts and I LOVE it. It was the first one I bought.

My DH stayed at Polynesian as a kid the first time he went to Disney World, so it's near and dear to his heart. We stayed there before our wedding, and it amazes me that's the only time we've actually stayed there. We had a trip planned but had to cancel due to Covid, so hopefully we'll get a chance to stay in the studios to decide if we want to add on or not in 2021.

You'll note a theme, though -- we own all 3 Peter Dominick resorts; both WL DVCs, both AKL DVCs (which, yes, I know, is technically one DVC, but we do own at both Jambo and Kidani!), VGC, and then a small contract at HHI (eventual goal of staying there on the drive down to Disney) and some SAP at SSR (but also priority for Treehouses during the holidays).

My Grand Californian reservation was my first cancelled Covid trip. It was within about 2 weeks of the initial closure - early April.

Thanks!! We actually considered week 48 too, it was a tough call. That is when we honeymooned there. We love that week too. It would be awesome having back to back guaranteed weeks. Now the gears are turning, addonitis is powerful. lol

IT IS.

We ended up doing back to back weeks because my DH loves the idea of being at WDW for Thanksgiving (as his sister and family live in Florida), and I love visiting over the Christmas holidays, and we couldn't decide which week. But we also have two children, and wanted to be able to leave them each a FW... not to mention that while our kids are kids, we're unlikely to take two weeks off, but once they are grown up, DH and I would enjoy going for two weeks. And that's how we ended up where we are, LOL.

I also really like the FWs because I *can* cancel them whenever I want. I might be an odd duck, but I didn't purchase a FW because I intend to go that same week every year. I purchased them so that I can be guaranteed that week when I *do* want to go during that time, without having to worry about walking a reservation. It's there when I want it.

Thanks for all of the info. I have an odd question, considering that we just bought a FW contract, you wouldn't think I would want to not go during that time, but since my wife does have a variable shift, she doesn't always have that weekend off. In fact, she does not in 2021. So, is it possible to rent the entire week 49? Since it is one of the more sought after weeks, and at 11 months, it is not a guarantee to get in, cant those points as a FW be rented at a premium? Ex. Copper Creek walk-in shower studio Dec 5-12. If so, since we can't go for those dates, we could rent a studio that week, then just use our SSR points for our vacation. I am just not sure if DVC has the ability to restrict the FW component. We aren't sure what we are going to do yet, we may just use our 2021 points and 2020 points to book a 2BR and bring a family member who was planning to get their own accommodations at another resort. Hopefully, at 11 months they are available. Also, can FW reservations be walked? Like can we walk it from Dec 5-12 to Dec 7-14 when my wife works the weekend that starts our FW?

You could certainly rent out the week if you weren't going to use it.
You cannot walk the reservation, nor can you reduce the number of days, without canceling the whole week first. If you wanted to walk, your best bet would be to cancel the fixed week in advance and walk the reservation to the date you wanted. You could also cancel and combine with other points at 7 months, or as you suggested, bank and borrow to book a larger accommodation. If you borrow, that is effectively canceling your reservation for the following year.

It is a sought after week. However, you need to rent this early in the 11 month mark for your premium price. Also, many sites do not let you rent a confirmed week Fri-Fri, Sat-Sat, or Sun-Sun. You will need to do some work with this. If your not comfortable renting, just convert your points and book what you can.
