So - when we were contacted (a year ago?) by our DVC Rep about the Villas at the Grand Californian, she told us that the minimum to buy in was over 100 points. Now I find out it's only 25!! sheesh! It would be so convenient to buy in there, since we go there way more often than in WDW. I'd be a lot happier knowing that we can book VGC 11 months out, instead of 7.

Do I have this info correct?

That's correct. The 100 point min buy in only last for the Founding Member buying period (not too long).

Take the plunge, you know you want to join the group of VGC owners! ;)

I'm calling TODAY!

We've been using our points at the Grand mostly. We can drive down in less than 6 hours. Planning a trip to Orlando is another story. If we're going that far, we want to stay a while and a long vacation isn't always in the cards. Plus, our adult children go frequently to Disneyland.

We're gonna do this!

25 points is hardly worth adding on. Especially if you are 6 hours away and can go frequently. 25 points with banking and borrowing will get you 5 nights (Sun to Thurs) in the slowest season every 3 years.

But, we can use our SSR points, using the VGC to get in at the 11 month window - right?

What's the point in adding on if you can't use all your non-VGC points at the 11 month mark?

If you are already a DVC member, you can add on as few as 25 points, 50 if you wish to finance. However, ONLY your VGC points can be used at the 11 month mark. Your SS points can only be combined at the 7 month mark. So your booking advantage would only be 25 points or whatever amount you add on.

If you want to stay there, you almost have to own there. Points are high, very high infact, but the MF's are low. And you get a very long contract. I wouldn't buy anywhere else with the hope that I can use those points at 7 months for VGC.

I own there and will almost always use my points there. Maybe 3 times at most, I will use my points at WDW. I live in Iowa and it is a good way to alternate out of Florida. We like MLB baseball, so with the Dodgers and Angels there its a good alternative. Which Florida doesn't have for me except Spring Training.

the amount of points I have allow me a 5 night Sun-Thursday trip every year in a studio, or EOY in a 1br. With a small cushion. If you can afford it, buy where you want to stay.

the point is you could own at every resort with 25 points and own a bunch of cheap OKW points and beat the system. Not really fair to those who own larger points at a particular resort.

Think of your points as representing a small piece of real estate at your home resort. You pay maintenance fees, real estate taxes, etc. in the form of MF's for that resort. In your case, you have a small chunk of SSR. Since you own that small chunk of SSR, you have the right to make reservations at SSR at 11 months, prior to DVC members who do not own at SSR. At the 7 month window SSR opens up to non-SSR owning DVC members.

If you add on at VGC, those points are available for 11 month reservations at VGC only. You can't use SSR at VGC at that 11 month interval since the SSR points don't represent a real estate investment at VGC.

Hope this helps.

John

Add on at VGC, then sell your SSR points. You then book VGC at 11 months and a WDW at 7 months. I'm pretty sure you can still get SSR at 7 months no problem. :)

That is pretty much the logic I used. I bought a small BWV resale, added on the points that I needed for DL trips. I figured at 7 months out I could always piece together a WDW vacation. Hard to piece together a DL trip, especially with only one DVC there.

We sold half of our BWV points when we bought in at the VGC. But we did buy the BWV 11 years ago, so we made money on the sale. We also had not planned on selling it, we were just going to do a small add on to have the 11 month window, but the incentives at the event they did were so good, we added 500 points. We still also have enough BWV points to book at least a week there, so we didn't loose our 11 month booking window at WDW. Good luck with what ever you decide. I agree that people will be making shorter stays in CA, the 11 month booking window will be important for things like NYE and holiday weekends.

I'm almost 100% sure that you won't be able to use DVC points to stay at the Hotel side of the Grand Californian after 1/1/10. (there is a note in the current point charts alluding to this) That change would be in line with other resorts with DVC options.

As a PP said, it will be much more difficult to book Villa rooms at the 7mo and shorter mark...

You will be able to still use your points at DLH and PPH.
