Adding more points to my existing contract?

I've been trying to understand the benefits and challenges of buying more points through resale and I do keep my eye open for the contract that I think would work best for us. We own at BLT and, quite honestly, that is my favorite place to stay. We lucked out on the home resort when we bought as we didn't do any research prior to buying. And I think, possibly, I'd like to add on an additional contract, but now I see the benefit of trying to buy with the same Use Year to keep it to one contract - it works best for how we travel.

So here's my question - what if I just want maybe 50 more points on my existing contract? Short of that "perfect contract" to come available on resale, can I buy more points directly from Disney? Is that even an option? I realize that it would probably be at the going rate, which is $188/pt now, correct?

BLT is $225pp and is predicted to increase on June 1st. Also, you wouldn’t be adding on to your existing contract. You would be purchasing a new contract. You would be adding onto your current UY. The new 50 points would be in their own contract however. You can use them in conjunction with your their contract though. No need to transfer points if they’re in the same UY.

Gotcha - thanks for the clarification. I guess the key is by having the same use year, I can use the points together, which I think would be best for us. However, at $225/point, I'd rather buy 100 points on resale, if it comes available (which I know I could be waiting for a while). We bought at $160/point, I think, so I just can't see paying that much more when I could get a resale contract for a lot less. At that rate, I'd even buy at another resort and get more trips out of it!!

There are more 100pt contracts at BLT than you’d think. They are a bit pricier than the 150pt or above contract, but they’re around. ;) We were looking for a 100pt contract a year or two ago and ended up going with 150pts for that reason. :)

I would definitely keep the same use year, so you have the same banking window, especially if your wanting the same home resort. Yes, you can buy 50 ponts direct from Disney...but look at resale, too, you maybe able to get a much larger contract for the same amount of money. Outside of maintenance fees, the more points you have, the more flexible your vacation options will be. I don;t have a lot of points compared to some people, but 345 gives me a lot of good options. They are all the same resort and use year, spread over 4 contracts, but for all practical purposes, they act as one contract for booking, banking and borrowing.

Thanks. And when you were looking for resale, would you just hold out until you found one that was the same use year? Or was it just a coincidence at first? I'm hopeful I can find what I'm looking for. I'm not in a rush and DH doesn't even know I'm looking...so time is not a bad thing for me. LOL

Well, all of my points in the 4 contracts were purchased direct so they were automatically the same use year. There really wasn't much of a resale market way back when DVC first began. Since you seem to not be in a hurry, I'd try contacting a reseller, like the Timeshare Store, and telling them what price range, resort, and use year you have in mind. They can be on the lookout for a suitable resale contract for you. As long as you keep it the same use year, and the contracts are titled the exact same way, they will be under the same DVC Membership number, even though they are separate contracts...making them act as a single contract for all practical purposes.

Great - thanks for that advice!

Just chiming in to say that I am in the same boat. We bought at CCV last year at 100 points. Like many DVC owners, I am now realizing we "need" (using that word loosely) more points. Financially, we can't afford another large-ish contract, but I am thinking of 50 points. It's difficult to find a small 50 point contract for CCV resale with the same UY (Dec), especially since they are still sort of new. So I am thinking of biting the bullet and just adding on direct for now, especially with prices rising June 1. I fear that even if I find a resale contract with those points and that UY, it still has to go through ROFR process and by then it will be too late if it doesn't pass. I hate paying direct a 2nd time, but I think it may be the best this time. FYI, you can add as little as 25 points if you are paying cash, I believe.

First, do be aware that the Resale market is vigorous and large. Don't be in a hurry to take a contract that doesn't meet your exact specifications of Use Year, Price, number of points, number of points available now, and etc. Hang in there, watch the markets every day, check many broker websites, and eventually, what you want should pop up.

I do recommend that if you are dealing with small contracts that you make sure they are in the same use year, and that you can get them into the same Membership Number. This isn't as important if you have hundreds of points in the account. Hundreds of points gives you lots of flexibility, with respect to bookings and longer or shorter stays. But if you only have a few points in an account, like 100, then you really do not have as many options. I have 4 accounts, with 8 contracts, and the accounts/Membership. The number of points in each account are as follows: 225, 245, 270, 325. So, I have enough points that I have flexibility and they don't need to be under the same membership number. Less points gives less flexibility, and that is why they should all be in one account.
