Adding Midday Magic on Site

I'm arriving middle of the afternoon before the rest of my group and want to add a park day to a package reservation for just myself and not the rest of the group on my reservation. It would be great if I only had to pay for a midday magic ticket. I called WDW and the CM said I could do that by going to guest services at whatever park I wanted to attend that first day but he was unclear on what that would do to the rest of my ticket. He said that once I "check in" to the reservation I can't make changes to it. Has anyone had experience doing this? I'm thinking I can buy a totally separate ticket same day and NOT link it to my reservation but don't know how that works with my magic band, etc. Anyone have experience with this?

You don’t need to buy another ticket.

Go to a Ticket Window and ask to activate your package ticket. You can also add on a day to that package ticket.
