Adding days to tickets (aka buyer's remorse)?

I've read a lot already on these forums, but I haven,t really found this information. My apologies if this is a really old question that I should've found in 30 seconds by myself.

As per my ticker below, I'm 45 days away from going to Disneyland for the first time. This will be part of a rather quick trip to Southern California, and our DLR time is squeezed in between San Diego and Los Angeles. Since we don't have a lot of time, we have planned (and purchased) two days at DLR (with park hopper, because I'm the kind of person who will pay for PH but not use it, but regret it miserably if I don't, so I figure might as well have it.)

Because we got a pretty good deal at the Quality Inn, and really wanted those two DLR days to be two full days (I am being delusional and thinking we won't be dead tired around mid-afternoon, but that's another story...), we are staying 4 nights. We'll be driving up from San Diego on Sunday 06/25 - the plan there is to really take our time with the driving, stopping almost everywhere, making a day of it. Spend all day Monday 06/26 and Tuesday 06/27 at DL and DCA. We're checking out on Wednesday 06/28 to go to L.A.

Now, I have purchased, as I said, two-day park hoppers. If for some reason along the way, we decide to change our plans, say we don't feel like taking so long with the drive and get to DLR early afternoon on the Sunday, or we realize while we're at DLR that we might want to stay longer (say do a half-day before heading out to LA), is it possible to add days to our already-bought tickets for the price of a third day, or would we need to purchase a whole new single-day ticket?

Sorry for being so rambly. And please don't mention how much of an idiot I am for thinking we'll be fine with just two days in the first place :eeyore:

You can upgrade if you bought upgradeable tickets (not conference rate or some deeply discounted tickets). We bought 4 day one park tickets from Ares travel at a discount. On our first stop at the ticket booth to exchange our voucher we asked about adding one day to make them 5 day tickets. He said no problem and quoted me 40 bucks per ticket, but then when the actual transaction went through it was only 25. So I got to keep my discount on the original tickets as well!

As stated above, you should have no problem adding days to your tickets.....just make sure it is before the last day. You will NOT be sorry that you got hoppers.....good call!! It's just so easy and so close!

The only thing you're probably going to run into is, since the original 2 day tickets didn't include MM, you won't get that by upgrading at the booth. With adding the extra partial day the extra hour won't even matter.

Consider using that arrival day as an opportunity to check out Downtown Disney. Fun atmosphere, terrific choice of restaurants, and the best beignets are at the Jazz Kitchen. It would also be a good chance to check out the Disney hotels.

To clarify, if we buy four-day tickets online direct from Disney (we want to use Visa rewards towards the purchase), we can add a day at a ticket booth outside the parks for the same price as if we had purchased the five day tickets online, correct? Will we be waiting in a long line mid-afternoon or are there any other downsides? Like OP, we may want to enter on our arrival day, depending on when we arrive.

I Believe you may end up paying the difference between the discounted 4 day tickets and the normal price 5 day tickets. As was said above, you may be lucky and they will only charge the difference between discounted 4 day tickets and discounted 5 day tickets.
The ticket booths are usually pretty quiet during the day. You shouldn't lose too much time lining up there. First thing in the morning would be a different case.

Just to clarify, before the END of the day on day 2.

I know that many people on the disboards buy from recognized discount retailers, but the tickets sold online direct from Disney are no longer discounted, correct? The only difference is the Magic Morning?

Only the place where you redeem your Visa rewards will know if the ticket is upgradeable and if so what the upgrade value will be. If you can upgrade I believe you'll get a new ticket, so I'd use MM first, unless you're staying on site.

Disney occasionally has ticket promotions, but it's exceedingly rare.

I think others have addressed your adding days question but I just wanted to comment that there's not a ton of sightseeing on the drive between San Diego and the DLR unless you're planning to spend the day at Legoland or something. I'm not clear on if you will already have spent some time in SD seeing the sights there. If not, then there's certainly stuff to do and see in SD but the drive between the two isn't super exciting. I think it definitely possible you could arrive at the DLR by early afternoon even with a slow start.

We arrived at the ticket booth at 3 PM on a Monday. There were only a handful of windows open on the side we entered (off Harbour Blvd). We walked right up to an empty window and our transaction was done in 10 minutes. By the time we were done there was a decent line of about ten guests behind me. So it might be hit or miss as to whether you have to wait but I imagine it would not be more than about 20 minutes.

Special note about Magic Morning. Our 4 day non hoppers from Ares travel did include one magic morning but the 5 day non hoppers we upgraded to did not. The CM printed out a separate MM ticket for us to use but we did have to specify to him what date we wanted to use it so that took away a little bit of our flexibility.

Thanks for that, that's very useful to know :) We haven't looked a lot at what we'll do in San Diego (besides the zoo), so that day might be left-over San Diego stuff before we drive straight to Anaheim. I guess we just had this romantic notion of a relaxed day driving and stopping along the coast, but reality might be quite different :D

We just drove home from San Diego on Sunday, and it only took 90 minutes. You do drive by the ocean for part of it, and you could stop in San Clemente or something and go to the pier, but I think it'd be tough to spend more than a few hours getting up here...

There's lots to do in San Diego, though, so it just depends on your interests.

The drive up the 5 on Sunday afternoon in San Diego is usually brutal. Especially between Oceanside and San Clemente. If you don't mind taking extra time driving and want to see some beautiful coastline, get off the 5 at Dana Point and drive the Pacific Coast Highway up to Newport Beach and then drive Habor Blvd up to Anaheim. The ocean views going up the PCH are incredible and lots of places to stop and eat on the drive up.
