Adding an adult child to membership

I have 3 children. The oldest will be turning 18 in a few months. He plans to take a trip (with my points) in June, 2014 without me.

Is there any downside to adding him to my membership? I am hoping that if he is down as an owner, he will get treated a little better than a regular 18 year old at checkin.

I don't have an answer to this but I'm interested to see the response. Have you considered just making him an associate? I believe if he is listed as an owner he would be on your loan, if you financed.

Adding him as a member won't get him any better treatment at the resorts. About all it will accomplish is to get him member benefits (discounts) for purchasing tickets and merchandise.

However, there are some fairly significant considerations you should be aware of.

• Adding him as a member means it is treated as an asset for him in any college financial support applications
• Adding him as a member means any future problems he may have (bankruptcy, divorce) will affect your DVC membership.
• Adding him as a member may affect your other two children's inheritance situation should something happen to you.

"Adding him to your membership" means having your deed rewritten, which is going to cost $$$. It's not as easy as calling member services and adding him. As OKW Lover said, it will probably not make a difference in how he is treated, I don't think the front desk knows who is on the membership, they just see the name on the reservation.

• AND adding him as an owner would give him equal rights to the account, including having to approve future sales of the account, etc, which could create quite a difficult financial situation down the road if you didn't agree.

As mentioned above, you could add him as an associate member, which would allow him to make and cancel reservations, bank and borrow points, etc, etc. But that could be its own can of worms if he doesn't really understand the nuts and bolts of DVC ownership.

My DD went using our points for graduation with 3 friends she was 17 and 2 friends were 18. The ressie had to be made in one of the 18 yr olds name but all else was fine. She and her friends had a ball - treatment was just like we were there. She had a AP pass so used it for discounts. I did not feel a need to add her to our contract although we have 3 DD's and the youngest just turned 18 all Disney lovers and it did cross me mind recently. I think I will wait until we are a bit older and decide which DD gets what points once they are settled into "life"

I agree with the other info. In general I think it's a bad idea for the reasons noted. That said, we did so for our oldest but not our youngest. What we did was add her to our AKV 100 pts (4*25) but not our BWV more because we had intended to sell BWV than anything else. We felt the benefits (discounts, options, perks) worth the risk in this situation. But she's a little older, through school and stable with a child of her own.

Agreed with this. It's not as simple as just calling MS and having his name added on. He would need to become part owner in order to become a member.

DS is half Asian. He looks full Asian. His last name is Asian while mine is very white bread. I have seen many instances of him being hassled, called names, people in authority not believing that he's my son (even though, yes! I did give birth to him, 18 hours of labor) etc. I do not wish for him to have to deal with that, especially if he's travelling on his own for the first time.

Associate members can book vacations with your points but not much more. They do not qualify for any of the DVC member benefits, such as reduced prices on AP's. Those discounts are for the member to exercise.

It doesn't sound like that issue will be solved by putting his name on the deed. It's not as though he'll have it with him or even that the CM checking him in will know whether he's an owner or not. All he needs is his name on the reservation. Heck, renters often aren't owners and they don't seem to have this issue.

What you're describing is racism on the part of the CMs checking him in and that s/b reported to the resort manager and DVC leadership as soon as possible after it happens. Owner or guest, this is unacceptable and I hope you've reported it whenever it's happened to him at DVC.
