We have owned SSR for almost 10 years and occasionally think about adding on. We would probably only add 100 points to our current 175. We are now a family of 5 so in some resorts a 2 bedroom is needed. This time around I've been wondering if it's better to add more points at SSR to make it easier to book. I'm just concerned that it will be very hard to use the non-home resort points at 7 months. I know we could bank and borrow and alternate resorts but 300 points at one resort isn't always enough.
I hope this makes sense:) basically, is it better to have 275 points at one resort with one use year or have home resort advantage at 2 resorts? I like SSR ok - I'm happy if I'm at Disney! It's not my favorite though.

Purely from an ease of use standpoint, it is definitely easiest to have all of your points in one contract, one use year, one resort. But, it just depends on what you want to do with you points. If you plan one trip every 1-2 years and don't like split stays, and don't mind what resort you are at, then for you, adding to your SSR points in the same UY would be the best choice.

But, if you really want BLT at Christmas or BWV during F&W, and your frustrated and dissatisfied because you can never get it, then perhaps adding some points at one of those resorts would make sense. Your info indicates that you live in FL, so maybe long weekends for F&W or F&G or MVMCP are something that would work for you and having ownership at a resort close to the parks would be desirable.

What makes owning at one resort more difficult is buying a resale with a different UY. Yes, you can transfer the points from one to the other, but transferred points do not show up on the member website, so you always have to call to use those transferred points and keep track of them. If you have to wait 1 hour after online booking opens to call at the critical 7 month mark, you may miss out on certain room types, depending on the time of the year. It's not impossible to have 2 UY with the same resort (we actually do), but life would be much easier if you have the same UY with your add-on points.

This really comes down to personal preference.

FWIW, IMO, it only makes sense to add on elsewhere if you can book what you need with those add-on points before the 7 month window opens. Go for it if you are willing to do a split stay or if you are OK with using those ad-on points every other year.

As long as you get the same use year and make sure Disney adds the contract to your current membership, you shouldn't have trouble using any extra points from the add on contract at 7 months. Since you don't mind staying at SSR, those add-on points can be combined with your existing SSR points to book at 7 months. There is very, very rarely any trouble getting something at SSR at 7 months.
