Have you or anyone you know had this done. If so, please share your/their experience. I have just started reading about it and was curious.

I was wondering if this may be an option for my mom (69yrs old). She was diagnosed with Parkinson's (about 5yrs now) and since March of this year, has been having sciatic nerve pain. She got the steroid shot and did well until the end of Sept, when she got food poisoning (the Dr. said this could have made the pain come back from dehydration, who knows, but its back) She got a 2nd shot, and the Dr. didn't get her MRI pic out and gave her the shot (which she said was excruciating) in the wrong spot, so 2 weeks later she is still in pain (she has called and been back to the DR, they said it should work itself out, this happens sometimes, take these pain pills ...blah, blah, no help)

Anyway, just trying to find anything to help her. She may have to end up having surgery (the cause is herniated discs), but that will be the LAST option. She doesn't want to have surgery and DR has not even suggested that yet.

I read about acupuncture in Dr. Beckers book The Body Electric, in which he mentions being hired by the military to figure out why acupuncture works. As Dr. Becker mentions some generals knew it worked, had seen skilled acupuncturists in Asia use it to deaden pain so surgeons could operate on inured Asian soldiers, but the US generals never were able to convince US doctors to use it. The generals thought it would be a useful tool as pain relief in the field.

Anyway, not terribly helpful for your mom, but the mention in the book I thought interesting so I began using different alternative acupuncture ideas for stomach pain I have. I have not tried tradition needles, but one acupuncture idea I've used that has worked well for me is infrared light, or basically a heat light that I'll shine onto the bottom of my feet or onto my hand, two of the better known acupuncture points. It helps my gut very nicely. This is a light I use:

I haven't used it but there is a more sophisticated FDA approved infrared laser red light pain relief devises that works quickly. I've seen them for sale also but imagine different medical groups have them available in your area. You can read more about the infrared lasers ~

Discover the Benefits of K-Laser Class 4 Laser Therapy Treatments

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/07/28/k-laser-benefits.aspx

snippet from the article:

...The laser is typically a tiny fraction of the cost of surgery and virtually has no side effects, unlike surgery. Class 4 laser therapy can be effectively combined with a number of other treatment modalities, including various soft tissue mobilization techniques. Ideally, your doctor would do the K-Laser treatment before they do those soft tissue techniques.

“Another technique or modality that it’s used together with [laser therapy] is spinal decompression. When a person has a bulging or a herniated disc, by running the laser on the lower back, we are reducing the inflammation internally; we are reducing the cytokines (the tissue irritants in the body), and we are helping to stimulate the blood flow in the area to help that decompression treatment help to heal up that damaged disc,” Dr. Harrington says. “Another interesting area – this is one that we’re just at the forefront of – is both human and animal practitioners are using the laser together with either the platelet-rich plasma injections or with stem cell therapy. We’re just at the beginning of discovering the benefits of those things together.”

Examples of the types of injuries that this kind of laser therapy can be helpful for include:...

I had a horrible sciatica problem about 5 years ago. Acupuncture helped some with the pain. But it did not cure the problem. In my case I had a cyst that was clamping my sciatic nerve. The doctors all winced when they say my MRI. But bed rest helped me and I have not had a problem since. There's no one solution to sciatic pain.

Both my husband and I have several back issues, one of mine being sciatic nerve pain. We bought an inversion table for about $300 and do find that it brings us relief.

What kind of table is it? I am so tired of the pain and taking pain pills all the time. Do you have a picture of it?

If I stick a needle in my daughter will the pain in my *** go away????:rotfl:

I understand avoiding surgery but you really should check out the minimally invasive discectomy where you live. DH had it done and it solved the problem almost completely. He left the hospital by 11am, had a tiny scar, and was walking around without difficulty that same week. All they do is trim a little piece of the disc that's pressing on the nerves. You just need to find a specialist who does the procedure at an excellent hospital. Good luck.

As an expat living in China, I am totally sold and transformed by Asian healing practices. The Chinese take few, if any prescriptions for anything! In the two years I have lived here, I have lost my acid reflux, migraines, arthritis and digestive issues from weekly massage and foot reflexology. I was suffering last year from a knee injury and the pain was not going away,so I decided to try acupuncture for six sessions on my knee. Not only did all of the pain go away, but I kind of liked the needles.....once inserted, they would vibrate gently from electrical impulses. The area was warmed with a heat lamp, making the entire process actually quite relaxing. I am totally sold on acupuncture and other eastern healing traditions!

I'd try a chiropractor before I'd try acupuncture. A few chiro visits have always resolved my sciatic pain.
