Actor Fred Thompson Considers 2008 Run

What!!! It's probably the most sindicated show on TV today. It's got more flavors that Baskin Robbins. It's on like 16 channels and 142 times a week!! How could you possibly miss seeing it!?!?!

And my parents NEVER miss a one!:scared: ...Unless Judge Judy or Reba is on!;)

If we are going to pick our presidential candidates from the multitude of Law and Order actors, my vote goes for Christopher Meloni.

Even if I didn't agree with him politically (have no idea where he stands), at least I could drool while disagreeing:happytv:

I was just going to post this. Christopher Meloni for president!

And he can't wear a shirt!

Or Jeb Bartlett for President.

I don't watch Law and Order (or much else, for that matter), but I'm familiar with Thompson from interviews and when he fills in for Paul Harvey. I had never thought of him as a presidential candidate, but thinking about it now I would certainly consider him a good one. I had been favoring McCain, but now have doubts about him.

We need to be very, very careful electing our next president. One of my worries is that many people will vote for a particular candidate purely becouse he or she is a woman, a black, a staunch republican or democrat regardless of real issues or qualifications. Not that anyone fitting those descriptions should be ruled out, but our next president, as well as other offices, will likely inherit a huge mess. Perhaps a common sense moderate would be a good choice.

I think Fred Thompson is worth learning more about.

I do not see Fred Thompson becoming POTUS.

Why do we have to think about this now? They will not be happy until they campaign all year, every year.

Add me to the list. Never seen it.

I know Sen. Thompson though as an actor, but I know very little of his politics on issues that affect my vote.

I'm with you. I'm irritated with the constant Presidential election talk nearly a YEAR before the first primary. By the time the election actually occurs we'll all be so sick of them!

Be interesting to see how far this goes. A majority of Americans

1) Don't want to see Roe overturned
2) Don't want more troops sent to Iraq

Count me in as one who agrees with him on those issues!

I'm glad to see someone who is for those things possibly running. :cool1:

Before this news, I was leaning toward McCain but I can't wait to see if Fred will actually run.:goodvibes

I guess I understand why they chose that headline but do you think maybe they could consider referring to him as a "Former Senator" rather than "Actor"?

I think it makes the race very interesting. I know I really had some issues with the other candidates. Rudys personal life, Mc Cain is just well................, what can you say. I have a friend and her DS worked for him and liked him as a boss when he was Senator so at this point that seems to be the best I can say about any of them!

That would really throw the other countries into a tailspin! First we had Regan who as an actor, but many people had never seen his work, so that really wasn't a HUGE factor. Then Arnold becomes Gov. whats up with that? And then the guy from Law and Order is President. I think many people would have a hard time keeping the role he plays and him being President separate.

I agree. Maybe it's intentional. Did they refer to Reagan as an actor or former governor?

On the issues, Thompson said he:

_Is "pro-life," and believes federal judges should overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision as "bad law and bad medical science."

_Opposes gay marriage, but would let states decide whether to allow civil unions. "Marriage is between a man and a woman, and judges shouldn't be allowed to change that."

_Opposes gun control, and praised last week's 2-1 federal appeals decision overturning a long-standing handgun ban. "The court basically said the Constitution means what it says."

_Supports President Bush's decision to increase troops in Iraq. "Wars are full of mistakes. You rectify them. I think we are doing that now," he said. "We've got to give it a chance to work."

_Would pardon former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's conviction for perjury and obstruction of justice now, rather than waiting until all his appeals are exhausted.

Libby is "bearing the political brunt of something that should've never come about," Thompson said, noting that "practically every witness at trial had inconsistent statements."
"

Guess he won't be my candidate. I disagree with every one of his positions. And anybody who is not a doctor to make a statement that it is "bad medical science", I believe makes for a very dangerous candidate. I respect anybody's opinion if it is against their beliefs, but to state medical fact without going to medical school shows an incredible irresponsibility.

As for the rest, he is way too far right for my taste. I want a moderate - republican or democrat - I don't care. But enough of the candidates who lean so strongly one way or the other. That will never bring back harmony to congress.

I am an avid Law and Order fan, especially the original on which Fred Thomas plays. From reading his positions above, it seems he pretty much plays himself. Even in character, his political views are apparent and must be written into the scripts. It makes for a very interesting show as Thomas plays a very conservative DA boss and Sam Waterston, his more liberal executive DA.

Probably because he chose to leave the senate to return to acting. That would seem to imply that he considers himself an actor first and a politician second.

I don't seem Arthur Branch calling for a pardon for some guy just convicted of 4 crimes. Even if Branch is a conservative, he doesn't want to pardon a guy just because he's a powerful conservative. He's more of a (dare I say it) "law and order" kind of guy than Thompson apparently is.

You are very right there. I stand corrected :goodvibes Branch would never call for a pardon. I recently watched an old episode where they were debating Roe vs. Wade, so had that stuck in my head.

Has nothing to do with that. I didn't even know he was. Read about some of the stuff that goes on in his life.

His best role was the big bug in MIB II.

Actually, it was the original Men in Black - not the sequal.

I don't know Fred Thompson from L&O. It has been hard work, but I have avoided all versions of that show throughout the years :goodvibes . I have seen him in a movie or two, but know him more through his work in the Senate. I really hope he does get into the race. I have much more to learn about him, but his political positions more closely represent my own than any other current candidate. Run Fred Run!
