It really depends on what the activity is, why you can't participate, what else is in the area, etc.
For instance, they might do a gentle river float for folks who can't handle the roughness of river rapids. In Alaska, while we hiked, a few folks stayed at the Denali visitor's center with one of the Guides and explored that with a naturalist. If you can't hike to Delicate Arch, they have a bus tour to see the arches. If you can't horseback ride, they have a cart you can ride in instead. I couldn't ride a bike in Paris, so I got a Guided walking tour of the Gardens of Versailles given by one of our local guides. There's always something. If there's a specific trip/activity you're worried about, you could call ABD, I'm sure they'd know what kind of alternate activities are available. Or ask the specifics here, and if someone has taken that trip and they had someone who couldn't participate, they'll let you know what was offered.
In Peru, some folks didn't want to do the White Water Rafting excursion. They just stayed at the hotel while the rest of us went. ABD arranged for taxis to pick them up at the hotel and bring them to the place where we were all gathering for lunch. ABD paid for the taxis. Everyone was very happy with this arrangement.
Thanks much folks. Peru is one of the ones we were researching. Good to know about the White Water Rafting excursion. I have a water phobia so I definitely do not want to go on white water excursion but I do want to enjoy the rest of the items planned for that day.
