We're looking into taking a cruise in 2 years. My DD will be 19yo by then and of course would be too old for the teen clubs.

What would be available for her to do? I guess that she is considered an adult, but obviously isn't of legal drinking age so wouldn't be able to take part in things that involved alcohol. Would she be allowed into the clubs that serve alcohol? In other words, except for actually drinking, is she considered an adult in every other way.

Have any of you cruised with a child of her age (not really a child, but not exactly an adult, either)? How did they enjoy it? Is there another cruise line that would be better suited for her. Seems that many of the cruise lines are geared towards gambling and alcohol.

My other kids will be 7, 13, and 16 at the time of the cruise.

Thanks, T&B

We have sailed several times with our 21, 19 and 16 year olds (we have been sailing since day one of DCL existence so they have "grown up" through all the clubs)

They have a ball...most recently we sailed last month and they still said it one of the best vacation they ever had....they go to all the adult clubs ..hang out at the adult pool, participate in all the adult theme nights in the clubs and just have a ball!!!

They always meet others onboard and usually keep those friendships even after we leave the ship. This last cruise was only a 3 day so they pretty much hung out with each other this time.

I'm wondering if she'll feel out of place since she would be the only one of my kids who would be considered an adult and wouldn't have a sibling to hang out with. Hopefully she'd meet others on the ship (well, not other siblings, to the best of my knowledge she doesn't have any others ;) ) and be fine. I just wasn't sure how many older teens/young adults would actually be cruising. Are there quite a few?

Thanks, T&B

post on the cruise meet boards. I am having the same situation with
our son, first time he won't be allowed in Common Grounds (he has
cruised on Disney several times) - I'm worried about him being bored,
but I have posted on our thread, for date of cruise from California, and
have met a family who will be on board the same time. The cruise
meet board is awesome - we have several families chatting back and
forth on the July 30, 2005 cruise and we just can't wait to meet them. :cool1:

We cruised last September when my eldest was almost 18. We have another cruise booked and she will turn 19 on the cruise.

She is thrilled to be going and loves DCL. And this is from a kid who is not exactly family oriented at this point....but cruising is ONE vacation that she enjoys - family or not!

I'm looking forward to her being able to join me at the adult pool and at some of the clubs, as dh is not exactly a night person.

That's a good idea once we book. Right now we just know that we want to go summer 2007 for our 25th anniv. Will need until then to save $, especially since we have college tuition to be paying between now and then (and for years after...).

Kris, glad your DD enjoys cruising. My DD is very excited at the possibility, which is good. This is the same girl who told us last spring vacation when we were at Universal for the tail end of our APs that she would rather be at home with her friends than at Universal with us. Teenagers are a joy. ;)

T&B -

You are NOT alone!! Teens just want to hang out with their all-important friends and it is very hard to come up with a family vacation that will interest them. Trust me, if my dd loved the Disney cruise and was totally thrilled that we are crusing again, yours will too!

BTW, I had to book during Thanksgiving break which meant that we'd be cruising over her BIRTHDAY, of all things. I thought that would really be the end of it. I mean, NOT to be with her FRIENDS on her BIRTHDAY!! But she was absolutely geeked that she will be in Mexico to celebrate her 19th :-)

We took our second DCL vacation last spring when our DS had just turned 18 and was a senior in high school. (Our other children were 11 and 14). Although he didn't go to the teen club as he had a few years before, we still had a really great trip. He ended up hanging with the adults a lot, which he didn't mind. We had late seating so we all wen t to the shows before dinner and then the girls went to the clubs after that. We took him to the comedy show and the Beatles night and he really enjoyed it. On sea days he slept in, read on deck 4, saw movies, etc. Since your daughter enjoyed it before, I'd say go again. There aren't a lot of opportunities for family time, we have to take it when we can!
