Hello. My husband and I are taking an adults only trip Oct 21-27 and have decided to try Universal for the first time. We are thinking of getting AP's because we promised our kids we could visit Universal during next year's trip, so we could get at least two trips out of the AP's. We would like to stay on-site for 2 days and also do HHN on the 22nd.

Am I correct in assuming that you need an activated pass for the discount when you check in to your hotel? How would we go about activating them if we don't arrive until the evening of our check-in? Is there somewhere outside of the parks to do that like at Disney? Also if we want to purchase the discounted HHN tickets, how would we do that without the activated passes? I don't want to wait until we arrive to buy them to risk a sold out party..Is what I'm planning even feasible? Or should we go some other route? Thanks in advance for answering my newbie questions.

It doesn't need to be activated. As long as you have your confirmation with you that will do.
