Activate tickets before check in?

We are doing a split stay. The first 2 days are room only. I seem to remember from a previous trip that you could start using your tickets from a package a day early, so the day before you actually check in for the package stay. Is this still possible?

Yes and you won’t have any FPs for that park day until you book them after you activate those tickets.

Yes. I believe you can do it as much as 10 days early, but only in person.

Ah, that is good information to have. There in would lie the problem, because I would want to plan FP in advance. I couldn't do it at the 30 day mark at least if I'm only booking FPs for the exact amount of park days I have tickets for?

No; the 30 day window doesn’t apply to you at all. A package ticket that isn’t yet activated can’t be used for those days prior to check-in until physically activated at WDW.

Can you change to room-only and buy new tickets from a ticket discounter?

I just had this same situation. Free dining package starts on 11/24. I was told I couldnt get FPs for the room only bookings I made for 11/22 & 11/23 as package tickets started on 11/24. I could activate them when I arrived and use them on 11/22.. at 60 days out from 11/22, I could not make fast passes, as expected, but I tried online help/chat and they went into system and assigned complimentry fast passes to AK 11/22 and HS on 11/23. i gave him a list of options and times. after that he said I should be able to go in and make FPs for the rest of the week which I did, got everything I wanted...
No one said this was an option... try it

But you do have to know they never allowed the pre-booking prior to a package. CMs are in major Guest Recovery mode due to the MDX glitches. Now that MDX is back up, they may not be inclined to offer appeasements.
