What's the best cleanser for a teen nowadays? My dd is just beginning to get acne. I'm from the school of popping.... ;) She's not liking my thinking...

As an acne sufferer for most of my life, the best advice I ever received for OTC products came from this website for Paula's Choice at http://www.cosmeticscop.com
If your teen requires more, take her to a reliable dermatologist for a prescription.

When my DD started to get acne...we spent a ton on OTC "everything".

Finally went to her pediatrician-and spent a ton more..that didn't work either and finally went to a derm.

The derm now involves 1 visit a year...and the annual prescription cost is about $50 per YEAR. (Highlighted...per year is correct.)

So - my advice...watch what you are spending on OTC stuff...and then go to a derm.

I got my DS some of the Stridex sensitive pads and they seem to be doing a pretty good job.

He is a 13 yr old boy so I knew it had to be simple and easy and quick or it wasn't going to be done, as far as using a special wash for his face I'm not even going to guarantee he is using the soap on all his body all of the time!

My 15yodd went to the derm this past week to get prescription stuff. We tried MANY OTC and she wanted the "organic" route however that failed.

Turns out she has "scaling" which requires prescription strength to reign it in. Her acne is pretty bad though.

She is also going to be on doxycyline as well for awhile.

So....I recommend a trip to the derm and save yourself $$$$ from the beginning.;)

Wish I hadn't waited so long to take ds (14) to the dermatologist. I took him a yr. ago and he was given prescription cream, but it wasn't strong enough. I took him back this year and he is now taking Doxycyline and using a stronger cream. He's doing much better.

Dermatologist told him just to use Dove soap to wash his face and body. She did not recommend any acne cleanser.

After a couple of years of bad acne, my son was given an RX for Bactrim (generic free at Meijer, probably Wal-Mart too), EpiDuo cream (which I don't think he needs any more), and he uses Clearasil Ultra pads. His face has been pretty clear for the three years he's been using this combo. I like the free part of the Rx!

Our derm said to use the Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser (not the face cleaner) for the face and yes use nothing with "chemicals" since they are in the prescriptions she is getting.

Now having eczema, I use the Gentle Cleanser when I need to and it does help.

My DD tried everything, including prescriptions. The only thing that worked for her is Neutrogena Skin ID. It's available through their website and after answering some questions, they find the combination that was right for her. She is now in her early twenties and the acne is gone, but she still uses the cleanser.

I wish I had gone sooner too. My son has some mild scarring on his face from us trying to "self treat" with various OTC things.

Anyway, he is on Doxycycline, Acanya Gel (which seems to do a good job), Differin, and a Cetaphil Oil Control Cleanser. He was on Bactrim, which really did a nice job, but within 5 days of taking it, he had an allergic reaction.

African Black Soap. You can get it at Health Food Stores and some vitamin stores. Natural, cheap and effective.

I developed acne as an adult. I went to a derm, but didn't want to take antibiotics because I don't want my system to get used to them in the case of a real illness. This has worked for me.

If you can get a prescription from your Derm, ask for Acanya. It's a gel that you apply to individual spots and they literally get zapped overnight.

When I was a teenager, Noxema did the trick for me!

Then by the time I reached my 20's it went away

Now that I am 31, it decided to come back :sad2: I'm currently using a Neutrogena scrub that has an exfoliant and it seems to be doing the trick :thumbsup2

If you are looking for something OTC until she can see a dermatologist, Clean and Clear Advantage Acne Control Kit works. The face cleanser contains 10% Benzoyl Peroxide which is stronger than most other face washes that usually have 2% salicylic acid. I have three teens using it with success right now.

Both of my boys go to a dermatologist- and he recommends washing with a mild face wash, like Olay for sensitive skin.

My oldest also uses Differin and something else...name escapes me.

My youngest uses clindomycin lotion after he washes.

I tried everything under the sun when I had acne years ago and ended up on a prescription drug called "Minocin". Bloomin' heck, did it ever work!

:rotfl:
DS 14 is at camp for a couple of weeks. I told him, no actually, I begged him :sad2: before he left to wash his face and take a shower every day at camp. He has an appointment with a derm when he returns home because the OTC stuff and his lacking hygiene habits are not combatting the acne.

Has anyone tried cutting sugar out of their teen's diet to get rid of the acne? I have a friend IRL who swears it helped her ds' acne to go sugar-free.
