ACL injury and depression

Oh my! And I suppose that it would injure more easily in the future once you went through this. I can understand better now why there may be so much depression from this. So sad! I just wish this boy would not push his friends away, but maybe he just needs time to deal with everything and when he is ready, I am sure his friends will be there for him.

When I was growing up (in the 70s), I never heard of this as a common injury for teens. I don't remember anyone in my school having this. But in the past few years, I have been aware and several teens in our town who have had this injury.

One of the reasons we did not hear of this like we do now is because the surgery itself has gotten better. A friend of mine from Ohio (?) totally messed up her ACL, MCL etc. Now in her 40's, she has had totally knee replacement in once of her knees. She can play basketball for fun and is active but she'll always have issues with her knees.

I also think, for females, we hear of this more often because of the sheer number of girls who play sports nowadays and play for school, club, travel type of teams. That's just a lot of wear and tear and lots of intensity. Years ago, girls played half court basketball--a much slower version of the game.

I think it is depressing, painful and can potentially sideline you for a season, two or end your career. Lots going on and different people handle things differently. My daughter's friend handled hers just fine (soccer and never the same, really) and my nephew became pretty fearful of re-injuring his. He went through a rough time during his surgery and recovery because during that time he found out that his dad was involved with someone else. You just never know what others are going through on top of the injury even,
