Here's the scoop: I've been on long term disability from my company since Feb 2009. Its been a long, hard year but I'm in a much better place now than I was then. I had contacted my company about perhaps returning in a part-time capacity(I"m unable to wrok full-time) but they made it clear that either I come back unencumbered by medical issues or I don't come back at all.

I was offered a good part-time position with another company last week and I start next week. I need to submit a letter of resignation but I am just stumped. This is what I have so far...

"Dear ______,
You might recall that I have been on long term disability for a few months. It has been a difficult year but happily, things are looking better for me. I appreciate all that you have done for me to facilitate my leave of absence.

Recently I was offered a part-time position with another company to begin February 1. I am therefore tendering my resignation from ________ effective immediately."

I'm hung up here. I think I may just call this person and tell her that I'm resigning and find out how she wants me to submit the resignation. I haven't quit a job in a long time and I'm kinda rusty at it.:)

I wouldn't tell them where you're going, just submit the resignation.

agnes!

Are you still being paid disability insurance? Are you sure you can actually *do* a job, even half time? I would hate for you to resign and give up your insurance and then find out you really can't work and be left with nothing.

In any case, your letter is too chatty. Make it short and sweet.

hmmm...i wouldn't tell them about the other job. i would, however, say something like: We recently discussed my returning to work part-time, and it is your position that this is not possible. I am physically unable to work full-time; therefore, I am tendering my resignation, effective immediately. Thank you for your understanding regarding my medical issues. HTH!

Hmm, chatty...that's what I was thinking too. I am not receiving disability anymore.I really started to turn the corner in late September. I took a college class which went swimmingly. And I started volunteering at a food bank which has been really rewarding. Although I believe that I will never be able to work full-time again(at least, not as a nurse) my doctor and I think that I can work part-time. The job is 3 days a week, 6hrs a day,Wed-Fri,as a school nurse in a very small elementary school. It will be a huge switch from my former position in an urban-type middle school (think: drugs, gangs, guns, poverty). The extreme stress at that job is what led to my year-long disability. Now that I've had proper treatment and ongoing supervision I feel strong and confident again, and capable of being a great nurse.

Dear so and so,

I am resigning effective whatever date.

Thank you,
me

You don't really need to say anything more than that.
